Wrestlemania XXXI

It’s that time of year again for Wrestlemania and as a wrestling fan I will be watching. Despite what people think of it, it’s quite entertaining for me. I wanted to share my review of last year plus what I think of the matches lined up for this year. I won’t be doing a full review of the show so this will due. Be sure to click the links below:

For those that don’t have the network and unless you have a nifty way of watching for free, you’d be paying nearly $60 for the pay per view. I’ve been a subscriber of the network from the beginning and the best perk is definitely the 12 pay per views a year. As for this years Wrestlemania there are quite a few matches I’m looking forward to. Of course there is the pre-show which has the tag-team championship bout which is just like last year. Again the tag team division gets no love. I think all titles should be defended at Wrestlemania in the MAIN EVENT. Also in the pre show is the Andre the Giant Battle Royal. Cesaro won that last year, so it’ll be interesting who wins this year.

As for the main show there’s the Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match. There’s a lot of competition in that one, but out of everyone I don’t expect R-Truth to win. Undertaker returns to face Bray Wyatt which I find to be quite interesting. Undertaker just turned 50 and it’s about time for him to retire, for good, although he is the epitome of Wrestlemania. Maybe next year he’ll be inducted into the Hall of Fame in his home state of Texas. It’ll be a great match for Wyatt as he is the new face of fear. Although every time he speaks I hear him yelling, “We Are Sparta.”

The match that I’m really looking most forward to is Triple H versus Sting. Sting has never wrestled in a WWE ring and is Mr. WCW. This match is not Sting versus Triple H, this is WCW vs. WWE. As much as people don’t care for the authority, this match goes deeper than that. Being that Triple H is the “Authority” he’ll probably lose.

Another match I’m looking forward to is Orton versus Rollins. Babyface Orton has been waiting to demolish the arrogant Seth Rollins. Looks like their career paths parallel as far as “push” and attitude. Orton is as cocky and arrogant as they come and Rollins is a match. In ring skills will be great as Randy is still on his game and Rollins is one of the best in the ring right now. It’ll be a great one for sure. Rollins wins either way as I can see him cashing in his briefcase.

Oh yeah The Bella Twins versus AJ Lee & Paige. Too bad the Divas don’t get the respect and credit they deserve. A lot of them have talent, but it’s like WWE doesn’t know how to utilize them. So why not take the “best” 4 and make a tag team match.  Wooptie Doo. It’s really just a filler.

Cena verus Rusev should be interesting. John Cena needs to turn heel or something. He’s back to where he stared in his career, a match for the United States Championship. The FACE of the WWE is in a match at Wrestlemania for the United States Championship. Is it a downgrade if he wins? Could the Rusev streak be beaten. Who knows.

The match that I could care less about is Brock Lesnar versus Roman Reigns. Realistically, Brock will demolish Roman. If Roman does win, Seth can come out and cash in his Money in the Bank. That would be quite interesting because then it’d be another triple threat for the title because both Reigns and Lesnar would be entitled to rematches.

Obsessions of 2014

I’ve been blogging more than music this year so this post is dedicated to my obsessions of 2014. My This Year In Music post, where I highlight my favorite albums, video, singles, and all that jazz will be up NYE! Check out my non-music obsessions tomorrow.

  1. WWE Network: As a wrestling fan this was a great creation and as the network launched February 24th, I along with other millions of fans took part int he $9.99/month, 6-month commitment. Check out my review HERE of the network. I have been obsessed not so much for the 12 pay-per-views included with the network, but for the documentaries. My favorite specials included: ‘Monday Night War’, ‘WWE Countdown’, and most recently ‘Rivalries’. Now that there is no commitment I can opt out at anytime. For the time being I’m satisfied with my service and as long as they keep the original content coming, I’ll stick around.
  2. YouTube: I’ve been addicted to YouTube for years. I have so many YouTubers that I’m subscribed to and in picking my obsessions of the year it was semi-difficult as I love all the content from those I’m subscribed to. This year though I’ve been obsessed with blogs and ASMR. Here are my favs: GabeBabeTV, AkaydollX2, AprilJustinTV, and LaVitaDiMeg. For those that don’t know what ASMR is, I just discovered it this year. Click HERE and HERE to check out those types of videos.
  3. Netflix: Who DOESN’T love Netflix. I cancelled for a month and tried out Hulu and I didn’t like it so I went back to my Netflix subscription. As soon as I signed back up BOOM the entire series of Criminal Minds was added and I became OBSESSED. There were full episodes here & there on YouTube, but I hadn’t watched the series from the beginning on TV so this was a great way to catch up. Other shows on Netflix I binge watched this year were United States of Tara and Law & Order. Unfortunately Law & Order has been removed :(.
  4. SHONDA RHIMES THURSDAY: Last but not least Shonda Rhimes is the BOSS of ABC on Thursdays. She started with Gray’s Anatomy then added the phenomenon Scandal, and now the thriller and mystery How to Get Away with Murder. Earlier in the year I was interested in Scandal as most people were, but this fall premiere was a bit lack luster. How to Get Away With Murder was amazing from BEGINNING to END and I can’t WAIT to see what else is in store. Cheers to more Shonda Rhimes content. #TGIT #ThankGodItsThursday #HTGAWM

Welp there’s what I’ve been obsessed with this year and I can’t wait to see what’s in store from 2015 from my favs.

June Favorites

We are OFFICIALLY half way through 2014 and it’s crazy how fast the year has gone by thus far. In this edition of monthly favorites I have incorporated some of my other favorites aside from music so let’s get to it. As always be sure to click the links to take you directly to the item, or something similar.

I have fallen in love again with my iPad 3 and since I haven’t used it in so long, I’ve forgotten just how much I love it. I have a 32GB and it holds just about everything from my music to games and lately my summer reading list. The book that I’ve currently downloaded to my iPad was The Fault In Our Stars (John Green). I hope to be finished within the next week or so, so I can go see it at the movies.

Next up are my TWO fragrances of the month. Something else I’ve fallen in love with again, ‘Sensual Amber‘ from Bath & Body Works. A new scent I’ve discovered that has taken the place of my current fav, ‘Beautiful Day‘, is ‘Pure Paradise’. Love these two and I always prefer BBW triple moisture body creams over the body lotions.

I purchased a new pair of sneakers within the last month and I never blogged about them because I wanted to get some wear out of them. I purchased the Nike Free 5.0 on eBay and I could not be happier. My old sneakers  were getting a bit too tight and I new that I wanted my new sneaker to be lightweight. I could not have chosen a  better shoe and working with kids it’s really easy to move around in these. I can’t wait to snag a neon yellow pair for football season (#STEELERNATION)!

I found this beautiful floral notebook in Barnes & Noble as I was looking in the business/entrepreneurship section. I wanted a new notebook although I’m not sure what I want to write in it, BUT I wanted something new and when I came across this floral journal for $10, I bought it without hesitation. I’ve been using my planner like crazy this past month and with my schedule about to get hectic (stay tuned for details) I’m so glad to have the one I have. Click here for my full planner review. Lastly I have my Clinique bag that holds all my essentials. Check out what’s inside by clicking here. I featured it in my ‘What’s In My Beach Bag’ post.

115746__lo_lmaxresdefaultMoving on, the TV show that I have been obsessed with is Law & Order. I know what you might be thinking, “Why not Orange Is The New Black?” Well that’s a show I plan on binge watching 4th of July weekend with my boyfriend and Law & Order, I’ve just been hooked on. I’ve been a DIE HARD fan of SVU, but now I get to catch up on episodes from the original series, ones I’ve never seen before and I love how the show was put together. Hopefully they’ll add episodes past 1996. I’m so glad I renewed my Netflix membership. Secondly, I’ve been loving WWE Countdown over on the WWE Network and my new favorite on YouTube are ASMR videos. They’ve been the only thing to get me to sleep.

Now it wouldn’t be a monthly favorite without MUSIC! (I mean duh, that’s what the blog is centered around). Enjoy the playlist below of my favorite tracks of the year, thus far (in no particular order):

Wrestlemania XXX [Review]

I write about a lot of things on this blog, primarily music, but no matter what I write about I do like to incorporate my personality and share my interests. One of my interests is being a wrestling fan. I’ve been watching wrestling since I was 7 and I came in right in the midst, more so close to the end, of the attitude era. At 22 I’m still a fan and can’t help but to be in awe at some of the events. Lately I haven’t been quite impressed with the pay-per-views and honestly wasn’t paying attention, BUT I did want to talk about one of the best PPVs I’ve seen in a long time, Wrestlemania XXX. Click throughout the next few pages to see my thoughts on the show, match by match.

WWE & Hip-Hop

wwe_defaultWorld Wrestling Entertainment, better known as WWE, has been no stranger to embracing Hip-Hop and having artists headline different shows/pay-per-views. With Wrestlemania XXX airing tonight (April 6) via WWE Network, I thought it’d be great to look at how much of a FACE Hip-Hop has had within the WWE for the past 20 years. Yes, I said 20 years.  This is in no exact chronological order, but I tried to keep it as chronological as possible. I just wanted to highlight the presence of Hip-Hop in wrestling.

Although it might seem as if it began in the Attitude Era it actually began at Wrestlemania V with pioneer Hip-Hop group, Run-DMC. Five years later there was a Wrestlemania rap for Wrestlemania X. This all happened in the late 80s early 90s when Hip-Hop was really making a name for itself and becoming mainstream.

Wrestlmania2000 was the first headlining event for the Attitude Era of Hip-Hop, but the wrestling group, The Oddities, started the Hip-Hop theme music trend in the late 90s. The Oddities consisted of: The Jackyl, Golga (Earthquake), Eric Cartman, Kurrgan, and Giant Silva. Their theme music, ‘The Greatest Show,’ was performed by Detroit Hip-Hop duo, Insane Clown Pose (ICP).

During the same time of The Oddities, Mike Tyson, was another celeb added to WWE appearances and his theme music was Big Daddy Kane’s, ‘Put Your Weight On It.’ He wasn’t the first boxer to enter a WWE ring as Muhammad Ali was there for Wrestlemania I. Then in 2008, roughly a decade after Tyson had made his ‘debut’ to the WWE, Floyd Mayweather took to the ring with his money making theme music to square off against The Big Show.

As far as Superstars, The Oddities weren’t the only ones to have Hip-Hop themed music, there have been countless others, including: John Cena, R-Truth, Mark Henry, Shane McMahon, Cryme Tyme, Big E, M.V.P., D-Generation X, Rikishi & Too Cool, Eddie Guerrero, Stephanie McMahon, The Usos, and X-Pac. Of course in the future there will be more. I will say that the music now is not what it was then and it’s a bit watered down. Watered down as in the beats could be better and filled with more bass and lyrically could be better as well. A lot of the entrances were put together by WWEs producer, Jim Johnston, who has been with the company since ’85, but there have been big mainstream rappers to make theme songs as well. That list includes, but not limited to: Three 6 Mafia, Naughty-by-Nature, Silkk the Shocker, Run-DMC, and Jacki-O. Check out the playlist below:

If that wasn’t enough, Hip-Hop artists has headlined other pay-per-views and the regular programming themes. Wrestlemania 2000 featured a remix of the California anthem, ‘California Love’ titled ‘California.’ It would be the beginning of Hip-Hop songs headlining Wrestlmania’s. Again, the ‘Attitude Era.’ The music was raw. It was no holds barred. It was rough, tough, and full of bass. Then comes the ‘new’ era, the WWE Universe era, where the sound of music has changed, WWE has changed and there’s a more positive message to the theme songs which was a 360 from the previous era. wrestlemania-30

For the past four years, Hip-Hop has made its way into a theme song for Wrestlemania; five if you count Kevin Rudolf’s WM26 theme, ‘I Made It.’ Tinie Tempah’s ‘Written In The Stars’ was the theme for WM27, MGK & Flo Rida headlined the battle between John Cena & The Rock with their respective tracks, ‘Invincible’ and ‘Wild Ones’ for WM28. Diddy headlined WM29 with ‘Coming Home’ and this year Eminem’s ‘Legacy’ from The Marshal Mathers LP2 headlines the John Cena/Bray Wyatt match.

A lot of the music during the Attitude Era fused rap over rock beats which was a great merge of both genres. As for the themes now, they could be a better representation of Hip-Hop than what is currently being offered. Songs within the millennium have a fairly positive message/vibe, which isn’t a bad thing, but of course I miss the hard hitting music from the era that I grew up watching. With the turn of events in wrestling at this current time there are great wrestlers and although the story lines are always repetitive, the talent is impressive. Impressive as in giving me something to actually be interested in aside from the usual faces that have been on the screen over the past decade or so.

A lot of the music now is very pop down to the ‘rapper’ songs chosen. I chose rapper instead of Hip Hop because the essence of Hip-Hop has drastically changed. I’m not just talking music for the pay-per-views, I’m talking entrances as well. Personally, I would love for The Usos to get a new theme. As energized as they are they need music to match that energy. Their current entrance does not. Big E.’s can stay for now. When it comes to pay-per-viewes, take Flo Rida. His track ‘How I Feel’ was the theme for the 2013 Survivor Series. He’s a rapper by what he does, but it seems to be more of auto-tune rap these days. So I guess although he’s a rapper, his music isn’t really Hip-Hop. The song chosen for the 2014 Royal Rumble was a better choice to call a Hip-Hop song. The show was spearheaded by 2 Chainz/Wiz Khalifa’s ‘We Own It’.

Hip-Hop as a culture has been embraced within the WWE showing just how versed it is as a multicultural company. Lately I have looked past the music because nothing has really stood out to me. I’m still the same fan I was at 7 years old and becoming a fan during a definitive era. I’ll remain one and can only sit back and wonder exactly where this company is going.

WWE Network [Review]

UnknownThe WWE Network launched this past Monday, 2.24.14, and along with millions (and Millions) of fans I jumped right on the bandwagon and went on to download the app. It took me over an hour to do so and I ran into a lot of connection issues which was to be expected. First off, I had not signed up on WWE.COM which I should have done initially. Having already signed up would have made the process a lot faster. I had the WWE app on my iPad, but I never really needed to sign up. So, not having been a member of the WWE community slowed down the process. Plus I was in an area where the WiFi wasn’t all that great and I think that added to the connection issues. Upon signing up, I did NOT receive the free trial. Again, I suppose, due to connection issues, my billing went through PayPal and not my debit, which I had preferred. The money was instantly deducted and there went my free trial. After that, I had no problems. I logged in via my iPad and browsed to see what the network had to offer.

So the basic layout of the homepage is the daily schedule, below that shows, PPV, and recommended. When you click on ‘All Shows’ / ‘All PPV’ i’ll take you to the shows menu which is divided into 4 categories: PPV, In-Ring, Originals, and Vault. The PPV section is set-up two ways. You can pick by year which has the recommended PPV or you can click on the PPV by brand (WWE/ECW/WCW) and slide left to see PPV by years. Under In-Ring, you can sleet Raw/Smackdown, Main Event, NXT, or Superstar replays. Not every episode is available for Raw & Smackdown. For Raw the replays go back to 1993, 1998, 2012-2014. Smackdown is 1999 and 2012-2014 and the episodes for both brands are title along with the episodes available of Main Event. The episodes for NXT and and Superstars are not titled, only labeled by episode. The ‘Orginials’ section is divided by WWE Beyond the Ring, WWE Countdown & Wrestlemania Rewind. This is a section that needs work and I’m sure more will be added. The Vault section has ECW Hardcore TV, Legends of Wrestling (my favorite), Old School, and WCCW. Again another section that is build able.

Overall I’m pleased with the Network and see that there are rooms for improvement. It works on 3/4 of my devices: iPad/iPhone/Macbook, but due to connection issues I have yet to set it up on my Xbox 360. With the email sent out by WWE that issue is set to be resolved by Monday, 3.3.14. Only time will tell.

Here’s my 3 main questions regarding the network:

  1. Will the documentaries featured on Netflix be added to the Network?
  2. Will Raw/Smackdown ever be aired live?
  3. Will the Raw/Smackdown replay archives include all episodes or stay as is?

The archive of the WWE is very large and I could not expect for everything to be up at once. That’s just not practical. There is room for growth on the network which is exciting because who knows what other original content is coming. I suppose when Total Divas and WWE Legend’s House begins that they will be added as well. I wonder if Total Divas will be streamed live to coincide with that of E! or if it will be archived. Also I wonder if past episodes of Total Divas will be added as well.

Again only time will tell, but minus the initial connection issues and not getting the free trial, I’m pleased with the setup and programming offered. I’m even more interested to see where this is going to go and anticipating that all connection issues will be solved by Wrestlemania. I’m pretty definite they will.
