It’s that time of year again or the BET Awards. I remember when I was in middle school I would be excited to watch the show. Now it’s just gotten to be too generic, the winners are too predictable and there’s nothing really special about the performances. It’s amazing that the show has lasted 14 years. Maybe next year they’ll do something special for the 15th annual. Check out my 2014 performance review here.
It’s crazy that we’re entering the sixth month of 2015. Before you know it, it’ll be Christmas. Enough of the ramble, let’s get into my favorites of the month. I had quite a few music favorites this month, which is surprising. Check them out below and be sure to click the links to take a listen:
- Ed Sheeran, ‘Photograph’
- Wale x Usher, ‘Matrimony’
- Walk the Moon, ‘Shut Up and Dance’
- Future, ‘F*ck Up Some Commas’
- DJ Snake x AlunaGeorge, ‘You Know You Like It’
- Taylor Swift x Kendrick Lamar, ‘Bad Blood’
- Fetty Wap x Remy Boyz, “679”
I recently discovered Walk the Moon as I kept hearing ‘Shut Up and Dance’ on the radio and I absolutely LOVE their album, Talking Is Hard. Some of my other favorites from the album are ‘Work This Body,’ ‘Sidekick,’ and ‘Up 2 U.’
As for other favorites of the month I have been obsessed with my planner. I’ve been featuring my planner/etsy purchases along with “Plan With Me” in my Spicy Saturday series. The planner I use is the Me and My Big Ideas, “The Happy Planner.” I’ll be doing an update on the planner in a future post, but it’s really kept me on track with everything I have going on from blogging to grad school. Planning is the best part for sure. Catch up on my planner posts below:
TV, TV, oh TV. Now that all my shows have gone on break I’m excited for the fall, but the BIGGEST disappointment of the month would have to be the Scandal season finale. I’m glad the show has been renewed, but the way it ended left me thinking, “Really Shonda?” Olivia & Fitz end up together. Jake leaves? Melly gets kicked out? Cyrus gets fired? Papa Pope gets locked up? What happens between Huck and Quinn? Those questions alone make it sound like an amazing episode and all of it wasn’t bad, it’s jus that ending. I was really expecting something to happen to the president. I wanted Olivia to chase Jake. I wanted a CLIFFHANGER. Those two ending up together in their never ending love roller coaster is just annoying. I’m over them. I’m ready for a drama filled season. That last minute of the finale just killed me.

I am a huge fan of Miguel and I’m excited that his third studio album, Wild Heart, is on its way. In fact it’s set to be released sometime in June. His debut album, All I Want Is You, really spoke volumes to this new wave of R&B and made radio waves take notice. Miguel has this smooth vibe about him that while he might add Hip-Hop artists to his tracks his music is nothing but fine wine. It’s timeless and that’s hard to come by. He’s stayed in this lane and even with new music he’s putting out it’s still his signature. There’s just something about him that is so infectious that his music could be played on rotation.
His new track was featured on his EP, NWA, and this time around he’s enlisted help from Wale. Miguel clearly likes rappers with depth in their bars to be featured on his tracks. J. Cole was on ‘All I Want Is You’ and Kendrick Lamar was featured on the ‘How Many Drinks (Remix).’ His first two albums All I Want Is You and Kaleidoscope Dream can very well go down as classics yet he’s more so known for singles. ‘Adorn’ was a huge smash, but people really have to take not of the artistry of Miguel and how clever his wordplay is.
I’m excited for this new Miguel album. He’s great at hypnotizing the ladies with his voice and swag, but I think this time around it’s gonna be a tad bit more personal. It’s easy to sing about loving someone, but it’s a deeper connection with fans to sing about personal experiences.

Welcome to another edition of This Week In Music (my typical intro). Click the links below for my posts of the week.
I have quite a bit to mention so let’s get right into it. The Billboard Awards finalists have been released and Taylor Swift leads the pack with 14 nominations. There’s no surprise there with the success of 1989 which spends its 23rd consecutive week on the Billboard 200 this week. Sam Smith has 13 nominations, followed by Iggy Azalea with 12 nominations. ‘All About That Bass’ singer, Meghan Trainor, isn’t to be left out with 9 nominations. For full list of nominees, click HERE. Prayers go out to Taylor as she announced that her mother has been diagnosed with cancer. The Billboard Music Awards air May 17th and will be hosted by Ludacris and Pete Wentz.
Moving on to chart news, Wale has dethroned Kendrick Lamar who had the #1 spot for two weeks. Wale’s, The Album About Nothing, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 100,00 copies sold in its first week. The biggest triumph on the chart would have to be the Furious 7 Soundtrack which catapulted to #2 from it’s last weeks position of 17. In at #3 is Ludacris’, Ludaversal. As for the Hot 100, Mark Monsoon and Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk,’ still sits pretty at #1. Maybe just maybe it will tie with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s ‘One Sweet Day’ which has the record of 16 weeks.
As for new collabs on the way, fans of Danity Kane have watched the group dwindle like a countdown, 5..4…3…2. Yes the group is officially no more and the reunion is short lived. As a group Danity Kane released 2 albums under Bad Boy Records. My personal favorite was their second, Welcome to the Dollhouse. After watching Making The Band 3 and seeing how the group was formed I was a fan instantaneously once the group was finally formed. Now it’s just down to two ladies, Shannon Bex and Aubrey O’Day, who know call themselves DumBlonde. Interesting to see how this will pan out.
In other collabs, Britney Spears is teaming with Iggy Azalea in what can be a comeback or a flop with a track titled, ‘Pretty Girls.’ Britney Spears has rejuvenated her career successfully in the past, but could this collab be another chart topper? From the pictures on the internet, I’m not too sure. Hopefully the song if nothing else is decent enough for radio buzz. Maybe it’ll last longer than the short lived Fergie return.
Lastly, congrats are in order to new parents Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. They welcomed a baby boy over the weekend, Silas Ryan Timberlake.
Until next week…
Another month has come and go and I have a pretty decent list of favorites for the month. Not all songs are new, but are worth mentioning in this month’s rotation. Let’s get to it (in no particular order).
- Coldplay – ‘Sky Full of Stars’
- Wale – ‘Razor Freestyle (Bad Guy)’
- M.I.A. – ‘Baddygal’
- Katy Tiz – ‘The Big Bang’
- Lil Herb (feat. Nicki Minaj) – Chiraq
- Magic! – ‘Rude’
I came across this amazing original song from a new YouTube sensation by the name of Molly Kate Kestner . The song is absolutely video and since it’s release it has over 7.9 million views and was featured on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer. Check it out the song titled, ‘His Daughter’, below:
It’s clear that Wale is a WWE fan after his scuffle during a WWE event back in March. It’s been a minute since I’ve heard solo Wale since he’s been jumping on other tracks. Well he’s back on his game and has pays homage to his wrestling over the theme music for Razor Ramon (Scott Hall). He mentions: McMahon, Flair, Eric Bischoff, Curt Henning, Curtis Axel, Sin Cara, Daniel Bryan, Heath Slater, The Rock, and more.
As a wrestling fan I really appreciate this ‘ode’ to wrestling. Listen to the track below:
There’s been quite a bit of new tracks released this past week and I thought what better way to give my input on all of them than just to do a MASSIVe post with new music & my thoughts. Sounds good? Great. Here we go.
So there’s been a fe remixes released this week. I won’t go in depth with a review of those so just check those out below: ‘Loyal (Chris Brown) ‘ , ‘Yayo’ (Snootie Wild) , and ‘Up Down’ (T-Pain).
It’s been seven years since T-Pain has hit the music scene and his signature is all about clubs & liquor. His new track, ‘Drankin Patna’, is a bit slower than ‘Up Down’ and of course it’s auto tuned infused. The song overall is ok. I’m just SO OVER the strip club songs that hit the radio waves. I will say that T-Pain has stay true to the music he produces solo wise. Lyrically it’s nothing special.
I recently reviewed Trey Songz new video, ‘Smartphones’, and as he gears up to release his sixth studio album he’s back with another track ‘Foreign’. Now I hated ‘Na Na’. It’s annoying after awhile and lyrically Trey can do better. Then came ‘Smartphones’ which I actually like. I prefer ballads from Trey Songz. Now he’s up to bat with ‘Foreign’ and eh, it’s a toss up for me. I’m just not feeling the direction that this project is going. Lyrically he could do SO MUCH BETTER! I like the beat though. Anyway, his album Trigga is set to be released July 1st and when you pre-order it on iTunes you’ll get ‘Na Na’, ‘Smartphones’, ‘Foreign’, and ‘Change Your Mind’.
Now I haven’t liked a song that Mariah has put out, but her new one is catchy and sure to be a radio fave. ‘Thirsty’ features Rich Homie Quan. It reminds me a lot of ‘Obsessed’ as far as concept. It sure fits this day in time with thirsty being the catchphrase. Listening past the lyrics I really like this beat. I really like this one. If you’re not interested in hearing Rich Homie Quan there is a version without him. I prefer it without him. This song is a bit of a reach for Mariah as she is really trying to get back on the airwaves which makes sense due to the lack of buzz around ‘#Beautiful’ and ‘You’re Mine’. Could this be what gets her there? Yes. Is Mariah a better artist than this? Yes. Am I looking for something more on her album? YES!
If that wasn’t enough Mariah released another rapper-assisted track, ‘You Don’t Know What To Do’ , this time alongside MMG’s Wale. This one has an old and new school feel. She debuted this live on the Today Show as a part of their summer concert series and vocally she sounded good, at certain spots. The performance wasn’t a great representation vocally as the studio version overpowered in many instances. This one is cool, but I like ‘Thirsty’ more. I’m interested in hearing the flow on her album. Me. I am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse hits stores May 27th.
M.I.A. released her remix to Beyonce’s ‘Flawless’ after tweeting.
Beyonce camp has not replied for months > SO HERE >
‘Baddygal’ is so M.I.A. and I’m happy she released this. Great track and THAT BEAT is dope. I love this!
Now for the RACHET release of the week: Tiny & Shekinah. Yes you read it right, Tiny & Shekinah. Now Tiny is a reputable artist in her own right and Shekinah is a great hairstylist in the A. They’re best friends, you can catch their antics on “T.I. & Tiny: Family Hustle”. I never dreamed of these two getting on a track together. The tile? ‘Cut It Off’. I know that releasing music can be out of fun, to get a buzz, get a check, etc. Lyrically, come on. I find it quite funny, especially the hook.
It ain’t nothing to cut that d*** off.
Danity Kane has FINALLY released a new track. I quickly posted it a couple days ago, but never gave my take on it. First off, yes the group has gone initially from 5, to 4, and now 3 (Shannon, Aubrey, Dawn). Aundrea has announced her departure from the group which was to enjoy starting a family with her new fiancé. Congrats to her for that. DK3 released ‘Lemonade’ and samples Clipse ‘Grindin’ and in certain spots sounds like Eve’s ‘Who’s That Girl’. I like this and I can’t wait to hear more. I absolutely love Danity Kane and I really can’t wait to hear more. Nice track for a buzz.
Ariana Grande is back with yet another new track as her collab with Iggy Azalea, ‘Problem‘, storms the airwaves. ‘Boyfriend Material’ sounds a lot like Duffy’s ‘Mercy’, beat wise, and is a contrast to ‘Problem’. I will say that I like her original release ‘I Love The Way’ more than this one, but this beat works great with her voice. It doesn’t sound like she’s straining to sing. I’m interested in hearing how her debut album turns out.
Mustard on the beat hoe
DJ Mustard recently released a track off his upcoming debut, 10 Summers, but that doesn’t stop him from making beats. Jeremih gets one this time around on this track ‘Don’t Tell ‘Em’ featuring YG . A lot of the beats are starting to sound the same. This sure does sound like Kid Ink/Chris Brown, ‘Show Me’. It’s really a slowed down auto-tune infused sample of Snap!’s ‘Rhythm Is a Dancer’. I like this one though. I would like a full album from Jeremih soon.
Lil Wayne is still working hard on his upcoming album, Carter V, and he’s released a new rack ‘D’Usse’. I like the vibe of this one and I’ve always been a sucker for Weezy’s punchlines. Take a listen below:
