The 2014 BET Awards aired this past Sunday (6.29) and I’ve been waiting to give my take on the show for this edition of This Week In Music. Now I did NOT watch the entire show and I kept up with what was going on via Instagram but we will get into the winners that I chose in a previous post and my take on the performances. My initial post pre-BET awards were My Picks. To make it easier and to save from typing, I compared my pick to the actual winner. I didn’t do too shabby:
I heard a snippet of this track sometime last week and I didn’t pay much attention to it. After hearing it in its entirety, I love it. I really love that Chris Brown is back to releasing music, well able to release music, because I’m tired of hearing ‘Loyal’. Catchy, infectious song, BUT I could go for another Breezy track. This time around he teams with Usher and Rick Ross. If you haven’t noticed, Chris Brown has a formula. Put his vocals with a rapper and it’s a banger. Put his vocals with another R&B singer and it’s a banger. He can fit in on a track whether it’s his or a feature. His voice just works. I really like this track, I’m just not the biggest fan of Rick Ross. Oh well!

It’s another week in music that has passed and just incase you’ve missed it here’s what’s worth mentioning.
First off, CONGRATS to John Legend for scoring his first #1 on the Hot 100 for ‘All of Me’ and congrats to Iggy Azalea for having 2 tracks in the top 10 and within the top 5 ‘Problem’ (w/ Ariana Grande) and ‘Fancy‘ (feat. Charlie XCX). On Digital Songs ‘Problem’ is in at #1 and ‘Fancy’ is in at #2. In other chart news, Imagine Dragons debut track ‘Radioactive’ has bowed out of the Hot 100 after having spent 87 weeks on the chart. It holds the longest streak surpassing popular favorites, ‘I’m Yours’ (Jason Mraz), ‘Rolling In the Deep’ (Adele), ‘Party Rock Anthem’ (LMFAO), plus more.
As for videos this week there were 3 that really caught my eye: Usher ‘Good Kisser’, Sara Bareilles ‘I Choose You’, and my favorite video release of the week Sia ‘Chandelier’. The video is such an amazing imagery and be sure to click the link for my full review. In the meantime check out the video below:
In other new music Michael Jackson’s, Xscape, is set to hit stores June _ and hot of the heals of the iHeartRadio debut, , two more tracks have been released. Take a listen to ‘Blue Gangsta’ and ‘Xscape’ here.
In other new music I came across this track ‘Made for Me’ by Sebastian Mikael featuring Teyana Taylor. The track is featured I love both of their vocals together and will be doing a full review on his mixtape, Waiting Game, so stay tuned for that. Also I’ll be doing an official track/video for Teyana Taylor’s track ‘Maybe’ which hits airwaves Tuesday, 5.13.14. Check out the track below:
Moving on to the NEWS of the week, and no I’m not talking Rihanna’s Instagram. Dr. Dre is set to become the first RAP BILLIONAIRE after his deal with Apple. Dre and his parter Jimmy Iovine are expected to receive 3.2 billion for the sale of Beats by Dre and the newest project Beats Music. This will be a huge deal for Dre as he will surpass Diddy’s $700 million net worth and a huge deal for Apple as they have not paid over 1 billion for a company. CONGRATS to that!
I don’t like to discuss much celeb ‘scandal’ on here, but let’s get to Rihanna’s instagram. Her instagram was suspended than the account was cleared out. Why? Well if you haven’t read on other blogs it’s all for her topless post of her LUI cover. Will Rih be making a reappearance to Instagram anytime soon? I sure hope so because her posts at times can be quite comical.
Lastly, Chris Brown has been sentenced to 131 for the violation of his parole due to the D.C. fight. He has a hearing for that fight on June 23rd and is charged with misdemeanor assault. Due to the time served already, 200+ days between rehab & current jail time his lawyer expects him to be released soon. Although he is not physically promoting his music, his track ‘Loyal’ is all over the airwaves. It’s #11 on the Hot 100, #13 on Radio Songs.
I must admit that I wasn’t an automatic fan after hearing the song in its entirety for the first time. This is a good sound for Usher though to transition back to the airwaves being that it can target different markets. My favorite thing about the approach of this record is that it stays true to that R&B sound and it’s a smooth track. I’m glad this isn’t a pop like song as I want to hear Usher making quality music as this point in his career.
As for the video I like the simplicity of it. Nothing overdone, all black & white (minus the lipstick colors), but I like the concept. For a song like this the video focus on just what the main focus is, lips. As a fan I’m very pleased with this and I’m interested in seeing what’s next. Nice comeback to music for Usher.

Bruno Mars has been on one whirlwind since his debut Doo-Wops & Hooligans and he can only continue to grow musically & chart higher. He’s in the process of working on his 3rd studio album and vows to become a better songwriter.
“I want to write better songs, I want to put on better shows, I want to make better music videos. I want my next album to be better than the first and the second. I don’t sit down and think, ‘I’m going to write a song’, Inspiration hits me always unexpectedly: on a plane, when I’m out or just before I go to bed. An idea will suddenly come to my mind, and sometimes I manage to turn it into lyrics the next day. Sometimes it’ll take me one year to get something real out of it. You can’t force creativeness.”
He’ll be in good company with his new project and will be working again with producers Mark RHonson and Jeff Bhasker. Regardless of who he’s working with I can’t wait for some new Bruno music. I’m interested in seeing where his career will go next.
“Ke$ha (Kesha or, as she prefers after leaving rehab) would not hear of vacation. The star, who recently left a treatment to combat eating disorders, is already in full swing, working with Zedd, responsible for the worldwide hit “Clarity”, and that, too, subscribes to produce some tracks on the disc artpop by Lady Gaga.”
I’m not too sure how to feel about a new Kesha album, but I’m interested in hearing the music she’s working on with her new found identity and what not. She’s not doing too bad with the success of ‘Timber.’ Marketing wise she needs to get some singles going while the song is still hot.
Usher is teaming up with Dr. Luke, the man who has been credited for catapulting Kesha’s career yet stunting her creative growth. Despite that ‘rumored’ controversy, R&B icon & Voice judge looks past that at he gears up to work with Dr. Luke on his 8th studio album. As an Usher fan, which is somewhat now questionable, am I excited? No! Look at the track record of Dr. Luke: Avril Lavigne, ‘Girlfriend’; Katy Perry ‘I Kissed a Girl’ / ‘Roar’; Kelly Clarkson, ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’, plus countless co-production for various artists. My issue? He doesn’t do R&B. Despite R&B being a ‘dying breed’ Usher is clearly in it for the radio success which turns to hits which turns to radio overplay which turns to award nominations which equals great marketing. Usher for me is and will always be an R&B singer. I hate that he strays away from what made him the artist that he is. Creativity is one thing, switching genres is another.
Who knows what is to come and how much influence Dr. Luke will have on this album. Dr. Luke tweeted.
If that’s the case I guess I’m ok if Usher has a ‘Dark Horse’ sound because it’s not EXTREMELY pop to me. The sound is tolerable.
Coldplay’s, Chris Martin, will be joining the The Voice for 3 episodes starting March 31st. The singer will take his place as a univeral advisor to all four judges. This is just another ‘tweak’ that producers are adding to the show. He joins quite a list of others that have mentored on the show including: Miranda Lambert.
Martin will appear on the sow March 31st, April 1st and April 17th. During this time he will be assisting the judges: Adam, Usher, Shakira & Blake along with mentoring the contestants.
In other Chris Martin news, Coldplay will be releasing their new album, Ghost Stories. The albums expected release date is 5.19.14.
Every artist has that album that just catapults their career to another level. That album that I like to call the ‘peak.’ Once that peak is reached it’s hard to for the artist to top it, BUT the album becomes a part of musical history.
On March 23, 2004, Usher released his mega album, Confessions. The album sold 1.1 million copies in its first week and became Usher’s first #1 album as it set at the top of the Billboard 200. In 2004 alone the album sold 8 million copies. Billboard also named it the 2nd best-selling album of the 2000s deceased in the U.S. He went on to release a deluxe edition on October 14, 204 (his birthday) and it included 4 new tracks with the MEGA hit ‘My Boo’ featuring Alicia Keys and the success didn’t stop there.
At the AMAs he won 4 wards, 11 at the Billboard Music Awards including Artist of the Year and Male Artist of the Year. He was nominated for 8 Grammys (2005) and took home 3: Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best R&B Performance by Duo or Group with Vocal ‘My Boo,’ and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration ‘Yeah.’
There’s very few albums that I can listen to in their entirety and this album happens to be one of those few. Listening to the album 10 years later goes to show how iconic it is. The music is relatable and it still seems fresh This album also goes to show that people feed off heart ache. With confessions Usher had all ballads minus ‘Yeah’ (with Ludacris & Lil Jon). With his relationship with Chili (TLC) in the spotlight this album put their breakup in the limelight and although some might have took the break up personal and BLAMED Usher, all that did was get him countless record sales and radio play.
Compared to the music Usher is releasing now this album is R&B. In recent years he’s geared more towards the techno/EDM sound. I understand keeping with the times is popular and R&B is a dying breed I just wish and hope that in future music Usher will stick to the R&B. My favorite Usher compilation post-Confessions would have to be, Raymond v. Raymond being that he found the balance between more of a pop sound, but still staying true to his R&B roots. Confessions is still by far is my favorite work of his to date.
So it’s hard to choose my TOP 5 from this album, but here it is:

- ‘You Don’t Care About Me’
- ‘Cut Me Deep’

- ‘Medicine’ (feat. Blake Shelton)
- ‘The One Thing’
- ‘Nunca me acuerdo de olvidarte’
- ‘Loca por ti’
- ‘La La La’
The Target edition will feature 3 bonus tracks:
- ‘Chasing Shadows’
- ‘The Way’
- ‘Mad About You’
We’ve already seen and heard her spicy song with Rihanna, ‘Can’t Remember to Forget You,’ but she also has a song with fellow The Voice judge, Blake Shelton.
We just recorded it — it’s a country, folk song … I kind of directed him. I wrote the song with some people from Nashville and I sent it to him and I was super-nervous. I was like, ‘Oh my god. What’s he going to think?’ And he loved it. He said, ‘Wow! This is exactly what you were talking about. I love this song.
Here’s the Spanish Version of her track ‘Can’t Remember to Forget You,’ ‘Nunca me Acuerdo de Olvidarte:
Shakira is one to push boundaries and not stay within what she is supposed to sound like. She takes it to the next level as a Latin artist and isn’t afraid to test boundaries. I’m excited to hear it.
