NEW MUSIC: Pitbull x Ne-Yo, ‘Time of Our Lives’

28ff86276ca8468a2ef5705c32d279f4Pitbull is teaming up with Ne-Yo for what could be another radio smash titled ‘Time of Our Lives.’ This also serves as a follow-up to their 2011 chart topper, ‘Give Me Everything.’ I was not expecting to like this track, but surprisingly I do. Ne-Yo even throws in a Bobby Shmurda bar in the first line of the song:

I know my rent was gon be late about a week ago

I could definitely hear this played during a commercial and really make waves on the radio. Pitbull will be releasing his new album, Globalization, on November 24th. Listen to the track below:

Then & Now Thursday (V.9): Pitbull

When I first created this segment on MusicMovingForward I had all intentions of Pitbull being the first artist I wrote about. The evolution of his career is what inspired this series. Well here it is about 3 months in of me doing this series and I am finally going to do my take on the artist, Armando Christian Perez, better known as Pitbull.

The first time I heard or saw Pitbull was alongside Lil Jon in his video for ‘Dammit Man.’ The year was 2004 and Pitbull merged Reggaeton with the King of Crunk very well. His debut album, M.I.A.M.I., stemmed hits ‘Culo’, ‘Toma’ and ‘Dammit Man.’ After that I didn’t really know if he would last let alone be the international sensation that he is today.

‘Culo’ and ‘Toma’ were more popular, in my opinion, and reached a different market other than urban radio and the hits clearly kept coming. He followed up his debut album with 2006s, El Mariel, which had the hit ‘Bojangles’ and followed that with 2007s,The Boatlift, which is the album that set the Pitbull sound that everyone loves today. ‘The Anthem’, yet another collab with Lil Jon peaked at #36 on the Hot 100, #24 on U.S. Latin Songs, and #8 on Rap Songs charts. The song is still played frequently on radio airwaves along with his hits from his following album, Pitbull Starring In: Rebulution.

‘Rebultion’ was released in 2009 and spawned hits: ‘Krazy’, ‘I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)’ and ‘Hotel Room Service’. It was clear then that Pitbull had found his place and sound amongst a crazy industry where it’s easy to get lost and become a one hit wonder or in other cases sound like everyone else and be unknown. ‘I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)’ was described best by Billboard’s editor, Michael Menachem:

“The clever meshing of reggaetón with Euro dance music signals what looks like a multiformat smash.”

It became his first track to make the Hot 100 peaking at #2 followed by ‘Hotel Room Service’ which peaked at #8.

His 5th album, Armando (2010), was not only self-titled, but it was also his first full length Spanish album. It didn’t do too shabby on the charts peaking at #65 on the Billboard 200, #6 on Rap Albums, and #2 on Latin Albums. It also  scored him 7 nominations at the 2011 Billboard Latin Awards.

Pitbull went on to top the success of “Rebelution” with that of 2011s, Planet Pit. That album spawned hits: ‘Hey Baby (Drop It To The Floor)’, ‘Rain Over Me’, ‘International Love’, and my personal favorite ‘Give Me Everything.’ That infectious track went on to become his first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The hits didn’t stop there. He followed up Planet Pit with 2012s, Global Warming. That album featured hits: ‘Back In time’, ‘Feel This Moment’, and ‘Don’t Stop The Party’. Chart wise it did not top the success of Planet Pit but it kept him relevant and on the airwaves especially with his ‘Take On Me’ (A-ha) cover, ‘Feel This Moment’ featuring Christina Aguilera.

Then there’s current Pitbull. He released ‘Timber’ with Kesha in October 2013 and went on to become his 2nd #1 single on the Hot 100. That track was featured on his 2013 EP,Meltdown.  He’s currently riding high off the success of ‘Wild Wild Love’ (feat. G.R.L.)

Over the course of his 10 year career Pitbull has collaborated beyond the hip hop scene, a scene he strayed away from by his 4th album. Again, “Rebultion” is the album that took his career to the next level and made people aware of his music. There are albums that an artist can’t top and there are albums that create the sound of an artist. Pitbull has a long way to go in his career and being that he can collaborate with just about anybody he hasn’t reached his peak, just yet.

NEW MUSIC: Jennifer Lopez, ‘New Love’

Jennifer Lopez is back with another single off her forthcoming, 10th studio album, titled ‘New Love’. Her new, yet to be titled album, will feature collaborations with Chris Brown, Nas, Rick Ross, Pitbull, Maxwell, French Montana (‘I Luh Ya Papi‘), and more. It’s expected release date is June 17th. As for the direction of the new album J. Lo stated, in an interview with Rap-Up:

“Usually I do an album in a few months, but this one’s taking me a year to really put together. Because it’s my 10th album, I think it feels a little more special.

iHeartRadio Awards 2014 Nominees: Best Collaboration

Another day & another category. The iHeart Radio Awards are less than a month away & there’s still time to vote for your favorite artists in a  span of 10 categories. I’ve discussed Best Lyrics & Hip Hop/R&B Song of the Year, This time around I’m discussing Best Collaboration.

Here were the 10 nominees:

  • Wake Me Up – Avicii f/Aloe Blacc
  • The Monster – Eminem f/Rihanna
  • Blurred Lines – Robin Thicke f/T.I. & Pharrell
  • Stay – Rihanna f/Mikky Ekko
  • Suit & Tie – Justin Timberlake f/Jay-Z
  • Get Lucky – Daft Punk f/Pharrell
  • Just Give Me A Reason – P!nk f/Nate Ruess
  • Holy Grail – Jay-Z f/Justin Timberlake
  • Hold On We’re Going Home – Drake f/Majid Jordan
  • Timber – Pitbull f/Ke$ha

Here are the 5 finalists:

Yet another interesting category. The odds of winning in this one is between Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, & Rihanna. ‘Timber’ could take the trophy home for this one with the amount of airplay it’s had. My least favorite songs are ‘The Monster’ and ‘Timber’. Just never could get into either of those. My pick is going to go to Rihanna’s ‘Stay.’ The other 4 songs are ok for me, but Rihanna’s, Unapologetic, is her best work to date in my opinion and I absolutely love the track. It could go any way with this category though. Interested in seeing who will win.

Billboard Hot 100 March Madness 2014: Final 4

It’s another round and since the voting/results has moved so quickly that I’m late on posting this. All is well because the top 2 haven’t been announced. Stay tuned for that.

Here were my pics for the final 4:

Lorde, ‘Royals’ v. Imagine Dragons, ‘Radioactive’

Daft Punk, ‘Get Lucky’ v. Miley Cyrus, ‘Wrecking Ball’

Here is the ACTUAL final 4 (chosen by the fans):

No surprise that it came down to P!nk v. Eminem. I am not really a fan of ‘The Monster’ which is simply why I didn’t vote for it. It was a close call, for me personally, between P!nk’s ‘Just Give Me a Reason’ and Lorde’s ‘Royals.’ I should’ve went with my gut, but both were  great songs. Voting wise P!nk won with 52%. As for ‘The Monster’ versus ‘Radioactive’ as I said I voted for the song I liked better and ‘The Monster just wasn’t it. Eminem beat out Imagine Dragons with 61%. ‘Get Lucky’ was up against ‘Timber’ and similar to that of ‘The Monster’ I went with ‘Get Lucky.’ To me it was more of a smash, but Pitbull is no stranger to domination of the airwaves. He won with 70%. It came down to Miley v. Gaga and Miley topped with ‘Wrecking Ball’ (at least I was right about something). Miley won with 70%. So my picks for the CHAMPIONSHIP round (the final 2):

P!nk, Just Give Me a Reason v. Miley Cyrus, ‘Wrecking Ball’

I would love to see these two songs go at it. I would LOVE to see the ‘love’/’breakup’ song. Realistically it could come down to ‘The Monster’ v. ‘Timber.’ My PERSONAL pick, P!nk v. Miley.

Stay tuned for the championship round & my breakdown of the final 2 tracks!
