May Favorites: Music & Scandal Fail

PicMonkey CollageIt’s crazy that we’re entering the sixth month of 2015. Before you know it, it’ll be Christmas. Enough of the ramble, let’s get into my favorites of the month. I had quite a few music favorites this month, which is surprising. Check them out below and be sure to click the links to take a listen:

I recently discovered Walk the Moon as I kept hearing ‘Shut Up and Dance’ on the radio and I absolutely LOVE their album, Talking Is Hard. Some of my other favorites from the album are ‘Work This Body,’ ‘Sidekick,’ and ‘Up 2 U.’

As for other favorites of the month I have been obsessed with my planner. I’ve been featuring my planner/etsy purchases along with “Plan With Me” in my Spicy Saturday series. The planner I use is the Me and My Big Ideas, “The Happy Planner.” I’ll be doing an update on the planner in a future post, but it’s really kept me on track with everything I have going on from blogging to grad school. Planning is the best part for sure. Catch up on my planner posts below:

TV, TV, oh TV. Now that all my shows have gone on break I’m excited for the fall, but the BIGGEST disappointment of the month would have to be the Scandal season finale. I’m glad the show has been renewed, but the way it ended left me thinking, “Really Shonda?” Olivia & Fitz end up together. Jake leaves? Melly gets kicked out? Cyrus gets fired? Papa Pope gets locked up? What happens between Huck and Quinn? Those questions alone make it sound like an amazing episode and all of it wasn’t bad, it’s jus that ending. I was really expecting something to happen to the president. I wanted Olivia to chase Jake. I wanted a CLIFFHANGER. Those two ending up together in their never ending love roller coaster is just annoying. I’m over them. I’m ready for a drama filled season. That last minute of the finale just killed me.

Single Review: Tamar Braxton, ‘If I Don’t Have You’

tamar-iidhyTamar Braxton is ready to release another album and for those who have ever questioned her vocal ability, she slays with a her new single, ‘If I Don’t Have You.’ I first heard her singing this in a video on Instagram. I thought she was just singing a song that’s been released already, yet I couldn’t pin point what it was. Well it was her new single that, if nothing else, showcases Tamar’s vocal ability tremendously.

Overall I think that ballads are her lane, but she’s singing about the same thing over and over. Love and War’ (click HERE for review) was about fighting to stay together. ‘The One’ was about not wanting anybody else. Her last single with Future, ‘Let Me Know’ (click HERE for that review), had a similar concept. You love and then you want to leave, yet you end up working things out. I get that this is what couples go through. I get it! I’m just ready to hear her singing about something else. No, I’m not talking “pop it” music like on her previous album, but something different. Lyrically, I’m bored.

Musically the drums in the beginning remind me of Love & War. In a way, the tracks are very similar and if this is a way to get her back to the forefront aside from her TV slots then so be it.I would love to hear a track with her and Toni on her new album and then another with all her sisters; both I prefer to be ballads. I’d love to hear her do a duet with a guy. Her feature on Robin Thicke’s ‘4 The Rest of My Life,’ was real nice (listen HERE for that).

Aside from gearing up for her new album you can catch her co-hosting on The Real as well as the new season of Braxton Family Values. Both shows I need to catch up on. Cheers for more Tamar music.

Video Review: Nicki Minaj x Beyonce, ‘Feeling Myself’

Just when I thought the video for ‘7/11’ was AMAZING, Nicki Minaj drops her video to her smash ‘Feeling Myself’ alongside Beyoncé this past Monday (5/18). The videos was released exclusively on Tidal, but of course the full length has surfaced elsewhere for non Tidal subscribers, like myself, to view.

Double Header Video Review: Duff x Spears

Hilary Duff and Britney Spears premiered their respective videos this week and I’ve decided to give my take in a special double header video review. I’ve been seeing clips of Duff’s video for weeks while pictures from Spears’ video with Iggy Azalea had surfaced before the video had even dropped. Well, both videos have been released so let’s get into the review.

Single Review: Britney Spears x Iggy Azalea, ‘Pretty Girls’

Britney-Spears-and-Iggy-Azalea-cover-for-the-duos-Pretty-Girls-collaborationPictures surfaced of a video shoot for Britney Spears upcoming single featuring Iggy Azalea that was to be titled ‘Pretty Girls.’ The pictures were quite interesting based off the tacky attire. Well fans waiting for a Britney comeback get their wish as the track has surfaced and that means that the video has to be on its way.

Britney hasn’t released any new music since Britney Jean in 2013. That album spawned the chart topper ‘Work Bitch.’ What couldve been a sure comeback didn’t get much buzz past that single. Her album before that, 2011s Femme Fatale had more buzz with hits: ‘Hold It Against Me,’ ‘Till The World Ends,’ and ‘I Wanna Go.’ Well she’s back and is teaming up with 2014 superstar Iggy Azalea. The track could be a huge smash or a flop. I wasn’t expecting much from it, but I’m impressed from what I’ve heard.

When the track began I instantly thought Gwen Stefani. Speaking of, both she and Fergie had less than stellar comebacks. The tone that Britney said the hook to the song over the beat reminded me of ‘Hollaback Girl.’ Not musically, just how it was said. The beat switched up a little bit as the song went on, but I’m not the biggest fan of it. It sounded more promising in the beginning of the song.

The lyrics are suitable and catchy enough for me to sing along to.

All around the world, pretty girls
Jump the line, to the front
Do what we like, get what we want
We’re just so pretty!

How could you not keep up with lyrics like that? Britney goes on to sing about how the predictable men are and how amazing women are. Guys have the same rotation and chase the “pretty girls” (pun intended). The lyrics are pretty basic, but this is a radio friendly song so they don’t need to be complex.

Iggy merges 3 tracks: ‘Killing Me Softly,’ ‘One More Chance,’ and ‘…Baby One More Time’ in her rhymes. She’s pretty clever in her raps although people just slaughter her on social media. Her bars worked and fit the flow of the song. I’m interested in hearing some new solo music from Iggy Igz.

Don’t expect to see Britney performing this track full out anytime soon since she’s currently injured due to a slip during her Vegas residency. As for fans that have yet to see her, she’s extended her show, Britney: Piece of Me, for an additional three months.

April Favorites: TV Overload

It’s crazy to think that we’re entreating the 6th month of 2015. Half of the year is almost over. Time to get into my favorites for April. I didn’t have many music favorites, but I’ve caught up and discovered new shows along.  Plus, can’t forget my YouTube obsession. Enough rambling, let’s get into it.

Music Favs:

I’ve been getting into planning & organization, hence the frequent “Spicy Saturday” posts and I can’t stop watching videos from these YouTubers:

Moving on to TV, I am in STRONG dislike of Shonda Rhimes for killing off McDreamy. No I was not always an avid Grey’s Anatomy watcher, but I knew enough to keep up. That episode of when she killed him off was so emotional, especially with Snow Patrol’s, ‘Chasing Cars,’ playing in the background as every machine was turned off. Then when he took his last breath?! Such an emotional episode. It’s about time for that show to end in general.

On the other side of Shondaland, I would have lost it if she would’ve killed off McDreamy and Jake in the same night. Scandal has been a hit & miss for me, but this month I’ve been watching and this back and forth between Olivia and Papa Pope is interesting. I mean interesting as in Olivia thinking she has one over on her dad and then he comes in and shuts everything down. Can’t wait for the final two episodes of the season.

A new show that I discovered this month was NCIS: New Orleans. Where the hell was I when the show began in September of last year? Clearly under a rock. I haven’t been into much of NCIS of the Los Angeles spinoff, but for some reason I’m really enjoying this one. Interestingly enough, CSI: Cyber has kept my attention as well.

Moving on from crime/drama/heartbreak I can’t forget to mention one of my favorite shows, The MiddleWhile I enjoy other comedies on TV this one always lures me in. My favorite character? Sue. Poor girl can never catch a break.

This Week In Music (V.30): Top of the Charts + New Music

Welcome to another edition of This Week In Music. Let’s talk top of the charts, posts of the week, and new music. First up, incase you’ve missed it, check out my posts of the week below:

On to the top of the charts. Alabama Shakes nabs their first #1 album on the Billboard 200 with their 2nd studio album, Sound & Color with 97,000 copies sold. In at #2 is the Furious 7 Soundtrack and YelaWolf‘s, Love Story, debuts at #3. Over on the Hot 100, Wiz Khalifa‘s ‘See You Again’ remains at #1 with ‘Uptown Funk’ still in at #2. Fetty Wap‘s, ‘Trap Queen,’ comes in at #3 bumping down The Weeknd‘s, ‘Earned It.’ Check out Alabama Shakes’ ‘Sound & Color’ video below:

Ciara is gearing up to release her new album, Jackie, tomorrow (5/4) and I’m in love with her latest track ‘Dance Like We’re Making Love.’ Another track has surfaced featuring Pitbul and Missy Elliot. The track titled, ‘That’s How I’m Feelin’ is an upbeat track, but I still prefer ‘Dance Like We’re Making Love.’

In other news, Beyonce has signed three artists to Parkwood Entertainment, sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey along with past X-Factor contestant, Sophie Beem. Chloe and Halle went viral with their cover of Beyonce’s ‘Pretty Hurts.’ Both deals combined total over $1.5 million. Check out the talented girls below:

Single Review: Ciara, ‘Dance Like We’re Making Love’

ciara-singaporeCiara is back with a new single titled ‘Dance Like We’re Making Love’ off her forthcoming sixth studio album, Jackie. Based off the first single, ‘I Bet,’ I expect a few more heart wrenching tracks after her public breakup with ex-fiance and baby father, Future. As for a follow-up single to that track this one is nothing but good vibes.

There’s nothing better than a feel good track and this is definitely one. I love the music and the lyrics are sleek and sexy, but not too much. It’s great to twist and work words to have a particular meaning, but not be vulgar. This song does that. She sings about dancing with her partner and hint here and hint there, but nothing explicit. It’s way more toned down than ‘Body Party.’

Vocally she sounds great as she’s not straining to reach any high notes. There’s been times when she’s sang certain notes and it was a raspy high pitch, but the alto sound works well for her. I really love how she sounds on this track and the hook is amazing. A hook is what makes the song catchy and is likely what you’ll likely remember as a listener. For me I can’t get the hook out of my head. It’s simple, but the way she sings it and stretches out the word “love” adds to the catchiness of it.

The music was not overpowering and again I can’t stress how good of a vibe it was. This is definitely a track that’s on my current rotation and a sure favorite. There’s not many current songs that I can listen to on rotation, but this one is amazing. The video for this is what I’m looking most forward to. She could do the story line vibe or keep the simple silhouette and dance around. Either way, I’m excited to see it. Kudos to Ciara on this one. I hope it makes its way to the airwaves sooner rather than later.

I’m looking forward to Ciara’s upcoming album as opposed to her last self-titled effort. The problem with that album was that ‘Body Party’ had put such high standards on the project along with her public relationship to Future that anything released after that didn’t match that buzz. Her relationship really overshadowed her album, but her she is with another buzz worthy single, a breakup that can lead to great music, and a beautiful baby boy. Her album drops this Monday (5/4) so I can’t wait to hear what’s next.
