This Week In Music [V.24]: Drake, YMCMBeef, & More

10986171_1565919690322155_539456075_nSix years to the date of releasing his first mixtape, So Far Gone (2.13.09), Drake dropped a new project that some thought was an album as it surfaced for purchase on iTunes. The mixtape, If You’re Reading This, Too Late, features 17 tracks. Of course the media calls this pulling a Beyoncè, but I see this as his way back to the forefront after being here and there and of course a follow-up to Nothing Was the Same. Oh the tactics. I still have yet to listen to the mixtape, but it’s something I will listen to on a car ride to work. If I can ride out to it, it’s good in my book. In the meantime I’m late (pun intended). Maybe I’ll do some type of review. Just maybe.

600_1423855169_lil_wayne_releases_the_free_weezy_album_stream_500x500_61Speaking of Drake, Lil Wayne was supposed to be releasing a FREE album, but nothing has yet to surface. Last month he dropped Sorry 4 the Wait 2  (click HERE for ‘Drunk In Love (Remix)’ review) and the beef with his former “father” continues. Cash Money is one of the longest running Hip-Hop labels that is  still putting out music and Young Money is the forefront to Drake and Nicki Minaj. The cover (to the left) is the artwork for the Free Weezy Album that has hit the net and according to Wayne the music has been sent, but according to fellow YM rapper Mack Maine there is no album and fans should just enjoy what Drake put out.

My thoughts on the whole YMCMB issue is that it’s a bond between Birdman and Lil Wayne that needs to be fixed. There could be a hell of a lot of outsiders putting in their 2 cents, but the real issue needs to be handled between boss and “son.” Regardless the entities are still together because there’d be no YM without CM. I really wish that the beef will be squashed and music and Birdman and Lil Wayne can go back to how things used to be. P

Imagine Dragons are heading on tour this summer, click HERE for dates, and they have released a video to their latest single ‘Shots.’ I was expecting something different, the video is inspired by paintings by Tim Cantor, but I still love the song nonetheless. Their album, Smoke + Mirrors, hits stores/online this Tuesday, February 17th. Check out the video below:

Trey-Songz-Trigga-Reloaded-2015-300x300Trey Songz has also released a video for his latest single ‘Slow Motion’ after flooding Instagram with the track over various Vines. The single will be featured on the re-release of his album Trigga, to be titled, Trigga Reloaded dropping April 14th. For fans looking for a ton of new music ‘Slow Motion’ seems to be the only track. As for this ‘Slow Motion’ video, it’s typical Trey Songz: Trey, female, no clothes, touchin’/lovin’.  I’m just over a lot of what he’s putting out. As a Trey Songz fan I try really hard to like his new music, but I’m not fully interested. Anyway, check out the video below:

More news to come next week and expect more reviews.

Single Review: Lil Wayne, ‘Drunk In Love (Remix)’

lil-wayne-sorry-4-the-wait-2

Lil Wayne has released his mixtape, Sorry for the Wait 2. No surprise that since the album didn’t drop a mixtape was released. What better way to connect with the fans and keep a buzz than free music.

I’m not vocally comparing Chrisitna Milian to Beyonce because there is no comparison. No shade to Christina, she has a nice voice, but it’s not for ‘Drunk In Love’. She didn’t even showcase her vocal ability. I didn’t expect it to be a cover. When I saw Lil Wayne was releasing a mixtape I wasn’t surprised to see that she was featured.

This song is just REALLY too much for me. They took a song that subliminally talked about sex metaphorically using surfboards and what not. Now their version is straight up fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. They took the sexiness out of the song. For a song that was sleek it’s now trash.

No surfboard, the skateboard. While the objects are one in the same, one with wheels one without, I’m not pleased. I listened through to write the review, but I’m good on this. I don’t care about the sex life between Christina Milian & Tunechi. Not interested at all. He can keep this. I’m over it.

As for the mixtape overall I haven’t really given it a thorough listen. From what I’ve heard it’s the typical Lil Wayne. I’m still interested in seeing how this whole YMCMB issue plays out. Fans couldn’t get Tha Carter V so this had to tie them over.

Listen to the mixtape HERE. ‘Drunk In Love’ track 10:

Album Review: The Pinkprint

91ZUimoZgtL._SL1500_Nicki Minaj released her long-awaited third studio album, The Pinkprint, on December 15th. The standard album features 16 tracks, deluxe 19 tracks, and the iTunes edition features a bonus track, ‘Truffle Butter’. The regular and deluxe of the iTunes edition both feature ‘Truffle Butter’, only difference is you get _ tracks fFeatures include: Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Drake, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Jeremih, Meek Mill, Lunchmoney Lewis, Skylar Grey, and Meek Mill.

The album overall has definitely grown on me. I wasn’t completely a fan as I heard ‘Pills n Potions’ followed by ‘Anaconda’. When she released ‘Pills n Potions’, I was thinking, is this how you come back to the scene? In between that ‘Lookin Ass’ dropped, even though it didn’t make the album, followed by her dope bars on ‘Chiraq’. After that I was ready for more and ‘Pills n Potions’ was irrelevant. Then she released ‘Anaconda’ and I thought, is this her way of including a hip hop classic yet still having a pop vibe? The first track, ‘All Things Go’ was a life update followed by heart break, ‘I Lied’ an ‘Crying Game’, before getting into some radio friendly tracks especially her smash with Beyoncé. The middle of the album before getting into ‘Pills n Potions’ was a little bit of this and little bit of that. ‘Trini Dem Girls’ is a nice track that I didn’t expect to like as much as I do.

Rumor has it she had a thing with Meek Mill which she denies, but he is featured on the album on two tracks ‘Buy a Heart’ and ‘Big Daddy’. My favorite from the two would be ‘Buy a Heart’. That’s another track I could hear on the radio. Both tracks because of the beat and the feature could definitely hit the airwaves. ‘Big Daddy’ is definitely more so for the hip hop heads. After ‘Grand Piano’ Nicki gets back to the bars on ‘Shanghai’, but I’m not a fan of the beat. I get the theme of it based on the title, but eh. To end the album, unless you have the iTunes version, ‘Win Again’ is alright. I would’ve liked a bigger punch to end it because Nicki does have bars. When you add in ‘Truffle Butter’ from the iTunes version THAT is a way to end an album. The beat, the bars, the total package. Dope song. Why is it titled truffle butter? That I have yet to figure out.

Side note, it wouldn’t be a Nicki album if she didn’t rap about “sonning” someone. That was one thing that annoyed me lyrically is that there had to be like 4 or 5 tracks that she said that just in different ways. After the first two times I had to check my Spotify to make sure I didn’t have the track on repeat.

My Top 5 —

  • ‘The Crying Game’
  • ‘I Lied’
  • ‘Grand Piano’
  • ‘Truffle Butter’ (feat. Drake & Lil Wayne)
  • ‘Feeling Myself’ (by default; “Pretty on Fleek, Pretty Pretty on Fleek”)

Tracks I DON’T Like —

  • ‘Favorite”
  • ‘Pills n Potions’
  • ‘Shanghai’

At first I didn’t like ‘Get on Your Knees’ featuring Ariana Grande, but as the beat builded it wasn’t so bad.

Click below for reviews that I have done of previously released singles:

I would’ve liked better transitions of the tracks as I like albums that flow with themes. I’m not saying she should’ve chose different tracks, but going from a track like ‘Grand Piano’ to ‘Big Daddy’ is a jump. It shows that Nicki is versatile, but the transitions could’ve been better as in placement of songs. Rating wise, I give the album a solid 4/5.

MMF Flashback — Destiny Fulfilled

image

I paid homage to Destiny’s Child sophomore album, The Writings on the Wall, as it was 15 years since its release. That album was released in 1999 and was followed by 2001s Survivor . The trio went on to do solo work and reformed in 2004 coming back with a smash ‘Lose My Breath’. Yes 10 years since their last album, time flies.

Destiny Fulfilled
was released November 10, 2004 and was the last solo album released by the trio. In addition to ‘Lose My Breath’ it spawned hits: ‘Soldier’, ‘Girl’, and ‘Cater 2 U’. From the 11 tracks, my top 3 are:

  • ‘Bad Habit’
  • ‘Through With Love’
  • ‘Lose My Breath’

Overall the album was a great return to music for the group following the success of Survivor. It gave the radio hits and ‘Lose My Breath’ was everywhere in sports whether it was at NFL’s Halftime Thanksgiving show (2004) NBA All Star Weekend (2005). Although they each had their separate success, I think that this album was the break they needed as solo artists to go in the direction they really wanted to. When looking at these performances versus what they are currently doing it’s night and day.

As a Destiny’s Child fan, it’s been a decade since they have released a full length album filled with all originals, and honestly I do not want a reunion. It’s great to hear them on each other’s albums every now and then and seeing them at the Superbowl was great, but if the album is to be rushed then I don’t want to hear it. Some things are better left ended than to reform and put out something that doesn’t feel or sound right. Maybe later down the road, maybe, there can be another reunion of a full length album in the studio, but for now it’s clear they are happy in their lives musically and personally. In the meantime, fans can reminisce over the hits.
