2015 BET Awards Highlights

Another award show has come and gone and as much as I convinced myself that I wouldn’t be watching this years BET Awards, I ended up watching. The show was hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson with a whole bunch of fluff and mediocre performances in between.
I won’t touch base on every performance, but let’s get into my favorites.

Video Review: Keyshia Cole, ‘She’

The artwork has been revealed for Keyshia Cole‘s, Point of No Return, and she’s back with the video for her track ‘She’. While it has been said that Keyshia is talking about a female lover she talked about the concept of the song on 106 & Park.

“It’s about self love to me, and going through my divorce, you have to give yourself a little self love because you’re used to somebody being there every night and they’re not.”

The video features a different side of Keyshia Cole which really isn’t displayed. She’s in lingerie dancing for someone whose in a suit, hat and lounging in a chair. As the video goes on its clear to see that she’s dancing for herself. It’s interesting to see that side of Keyshia. The gold ensemble that she had on at 1:50 was gorgeous. The video overall was way better than the others she’s released. I understood the concept of it and I hope that from here on out they only get better.

Keyshia Cole Reveals Point of No Return Artwork

Keyshia Cole is currently on tour promoting her upcoming album, Point of No Return, and the artwork for the project has surfaced. In an interview with Fuse, Keyshia discussed the concept of the album:

“There’s definitely more sexy songs on this album than I’ve ever done. I’m excited to see what the people think about that, so we’ll see how receptive they are to the album. I think it’s a great album and I feel like it’s one of my best albums to date.”

So far she’s released tracks ‘Rick James’ featuring Juicy J and ‘Next Time (Won’t Give My Heart Away), and ‘She’. Pictures from a video shoot have surfaced of a new single featuring 2 Chainz, ‘Ni**as Like You’. Click the links below to see my video reviews of two of the tracks:

Keyshia finishes up the promo tour, August 25th, and theres a rumored release date of September 2nd. More updates to come in future posts.

Regardless of the current state of her career there are a lot of Keyshia Cole fans still out there. From the direction of the two tracks she’s released thus far, I’d say scratch that and start from square one. With the album being due in the summer that’s probably not an option. Breakups can make for GREAT music, I mean look at Keyshia’s track record. In this case though, I haven’t been interested in anything. Nothing is radio worthy and I am unsure of how much it’ll really sell. Album sales are everything, but radio play at least keeps you relevant.

Video Review: Keyshia Cole, ‘Next Time (Won’t Give My Heart Away)’

I wish that her album had straight ballads like this. I love Keyshia Cole and the music that she had previously released, but ‘Rick James‘ in my opinion was not her best work. Now she’s back with the video for the track she freestyled called ‘Next Time (Won’t Give My Heart Away).’

This is the track that fans have been wanting. It’s heart felt and Keyshia is in her feelings more than ever being that this is based on her current situation. Vocally Keyshia has sounded better, but I really lil this song and hope there are more like these on her album.

Let’s get to the video. It’s simple yet a lot at the same time. I wish the video was more simple than it was based off how the track was created. She looks great in this video and there are parts where she’s just sitting singing, but it in a way seems thrown together. My favorite scene was her ensemble in the white printed dress with knee high boots. As for her attire in other scenes it was ok, the colorful outfit in the beginning seemed too big based on how she was holding it. Looking past the video I could hear this on the radio for sure. Great track.

This Week In Music (V.2): Drake x Hot 97 x Frozen

Another week has passed and it’s OFFICIALLY APRIL! Let’s get into the music recap of the week.

Drake dropped TWO tracks ‘Draft Day’ and ‘Days In The East.’ ‘Draft Day’ samples Lauryn Hill’s ‘Doo-Wop (That Thing)’ and ‘Days in The East’ has that ‘Take Care’ vibe. Both tracks for me are bleh for me. I do prefer ‘Draft Day’ over the other track. I don’t know how to feel about the music Drake releases. Although I’ have all 3 albums, I’ve never been the biggest fan. I respect him as an artist, but I’m not sure how to feel about the direction of his new project. I love what’s on the radios then I get the album and it’s like, ok for me. This time it’s reversed. I did like ‘Trophies’ and his ‘We Made It’ freestyle. These two tracks are just bleh for me. Maybe they’ll grow on me, maybe not. Only time will tell. Take a listen below:

In other new music news, the remake of Diana Ross’, ‘I’m Coming Out’ came by way of Iggy Azalea and Keyshia Cole. The sound will not be featured on Cole’s new album or Iggy’s debut, but is in the forefront for the soundtrack to the new movie, The Other Woman. My thought? I HATE IT! I do not like the remake of all. Not a fan. Keyshia’s vocals sound strained and Iggy oh Iggy how I love her, it’s just her  bars did NOTHING for me on this. You be the judge below:

Lastly and my favorite music release of the week is Marsha Ambrosius’, ‘Run.’ I absolutely love her voice and this song vocally and lyrically is AMAZING. It will be featured on her upcoming LP. Take a listen below:

Now let’s briefly talk about the AMAZING week that NYCs Hot 97 is having. The new series on VH1, “This Is Hot 97,” premiered on VH1 this past Monday (March 31) and the lineup for their annual Summer Jam was released.

If you guys are not aware of what Summer Jam is, in a short version, it’s a mega hip hop concert which takes place at Met Life Stadium. I went to Summer Jam in 2011 and the experience, well I blogged about it so click here to read on that. I’m 50/50 on whether I want to go this year. The lineup is ok for me. Check out the lineups below for both the festival & stadium stages.

When it comes to the Billboard charts there have been MANY albums to top the charts and set records and this week another milestone came for the Frozen Soundtrack. The album became the first to spend the most weeks at #1 since Adele’s 21. It becomes the 20th album, since the creation of Nielsen SoundScan in 1991, to spend at least 8 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200. I personally did not understand the hype of the movie until I watched it and let me be the first to say it is the best animated movie I’ve seen in a long time from the message to the animation itself. Well deserving of the Oscar wins it received. Take a listen to the Oscar winning track for Best Original Song, ‘Let It Go.’

Lastly in music news for the week

This Week In Music (V.1): Beyoncé x Kimye x Chris Brown

I do not get a chance to post every single thing that happens in music during the week from live performances to SCANDAL so I’m starting a new series which I will post Saturdays titled, This Week In Music. It will not always be in chronological order, more so of importance, so bear with me.

Beyoncé performed her last show of the Mrs. Carter World Tour in Lisbon and she broke into tears after thanking the fans for all of their support. Check out the clip below:

As for live performances John Legend took to the stage to perform his hit, ‘All of Me’ on Jimmy Kimmel. While I am a fan of the song I am not a fan of the EDM version played on the airwaves during rush hour. A ballad never needs to be turned to techno. It takes away from the essence of it. Janelle Monae took to the stage of American Idol to perform What Is Love from the Rio 2 soundtrack which hit stores this past Tuesday (3.25). Rio 2 hits theaters April 11th. Check out the performances below:

keyshia-madden1There’s been plenty of new music released, but I’m more interested in the albums.

YG’s debut,, hit #2 on the Billboard 200 and Shakira released her 10th self-titled studio album and is expected to debut on the Billboard 200. Who’s still holding the #1 spot? The Frozen Soundtrack. Stay tuned for my post on the movie in the next week.

I’ve also talked about 3 so far from Bruno Mars, Kesha, and Usher. Well Kesha is now not working with Zedd that was just a rumor, but I’m pretty sure she has a new album in the works. Lil Wayne’s Carter V still has no release date despite Drake saying at a show that it would be May 5th. Not sure what to expect from Weezy anymore, but I’m not excited about this album. Keyshia Cole will be releasing her 6th studio album titled, Point of No Return, and with her current situation she couldn’t have picked a better title. I’m not really feeling any of the music she’s released. I’m not a fan of ‘Rick James’. This will be her final album with Interscope.

kanye-chris-fashionweek2As for celebrity scandal, I haven’t spoke much on the Chris Brown fiasco or Kanye West so here goes my first and only time speaking on both situations. Chris Brown is currently in jail for violating parole. I have heard rumors that he had sexual relations in rehab & was talking about guns which resulted in him getting kicked out. Due to him getting kicked out he was sent to jail until his D.C. case court date in late April. My personal opinion? This is all on Chris Brown.I can’t feel sorry for an almost 25 year old that doesn’t have it together and had the chance of making things right. He’s given chance after chance and he just seems to blow them. I’m so over it. As for Kanye  West I’m over him as well ALTHOUGH he and Kim did look great on that Vogue cover despite what others think. Good luck to him and his 2 year probation and I hope he stays out of trouble. He’s not just living for himself anymore. He has a daughter. So to top it all off it’s ‘RUMORS’ that Kanye wants to call off the marriage between him and Kim because Kim had interactions with Chris Brown. MAJOR SIDE EYE to that foolery of a story. Regardless of whether it’s true or not whatever someone else did in their past before getting in a relationship with you is their business.

Welp that’s it for this edition of This Week In Music. Until next time…

NEW MUSIC — Nick Cannon x Keyshia Cole

It’s been a while since Nick Cannon or Keyshia Cole have put out music. More so longer for Cannon than cole. Despite that, the two are back with new project. Nick Cannon has a new album coming out titled, White People Party Music, and Keyshia Cole has been posting all over Instagram sneak peaks at her new album.

Check out Cannon’s, ‘Pajama Pants’ (feat. Future/Migos/Traphik) and Cole’s, ‘Rick James’ (feat. Juicy J) below:

Not really interested in anything that Nick Cannon has to put out, but his album will hit stores April 1st. No name or release date for Keyshia Cole’s album, but it’s set to be released sometime this year and feature tracks ‘Next Time’, ‘Believer’ and ‘Love Letter’ (feat. Future).
