Single Review: Kelly Clarkson, ‘Invincible’

kelly-clarksonKelly Clarkson has teamed up with Sia for the latest single off her upcoming album Piece by Piece. The track is titled ‘Invincible’ and it’s not as bubbly as ‘Heartbeat Song’ (click HERE for that review).

This track speaks to once being broken, but now being stronger than ever. The broken part of life was really nonexistent and now that it’s realized there’s nothing you can’t face. The concept of the track is one that is produced over and over, but its the artists execution that will make the track stand out. I enjoyed Kelly’s vocals on this one, but it was the music that I had an issue with.

The music was really loud compared to the vocals of Kelly. She wasn’t completely drowned out, but during the hook she nearly was. Lyrically I wanted more being that it was written by Sia. It was  bit too repetitive for me, but then again that’s how tracks get embedded into the brain and become catchy. This track is interesting as it would fit perfectly on Sia’s upcoming album, This Is Acting, but could also fit as a release from Sia herself. Sia also wrote another song for Kelly’s album titled, ‘Let The Tears Fall,’ which I can’t wait to hear.

The track is nice, but again the music was a bit too loud for me in certain spots. It’s like boom and then it quiets down again. Piece by Piece is available for purchase in stores/online tomorrow, March 3rd.

Single Review: Kelly Clarkson, ‘Heartbeat Song’

heartbeat_song_singleKelly Clarkson surely caught my ear with her new single ‘Heartbeat Song.’ It’s been nearly 13 years since her claim to fame on American Idol and she’s steadily stayed in the spotlight on the charts during that time. She’s racked up 3 Grammy’s, 12 Billboard Awards, 4 American Music Awards, and has sold over 20 million albums.

I first heard the snippet online from a video she posted of the track with her adorable daughter River kicking her feat to it in the studio. When I first listened I must admit that I was not all that impressed, but then again I didn’t listen to the song all the way through.

I like the wordplay in this one as its not the generic approach of an upbeat love song. She sings about forgetting love and that those feelings were still there. She uses the metaphor of a song and how it’s been off for song long yet someone comes along and turns the music back up. With her marriage and her beautiful baby all in the past 2 years or so, no wonder she’s singing about love. I’m all for it.

Vocally it’s the typical Kelly. She has a noted raspy pitch in her voice, but it works. I know that the studio can do wonders to a voice, but I still think this is a song she could comfortably perform live. The music doesn’t overpower her voice and it adjusts well to the changes in tempo from verse to hook.

Speaking of tempo, musically, this track is signature Kelly to me. She likes that Pop/Rock vibe and the way that the song glides between two different beats is pretty nice. I didn’t think I would like it, but the music is catchy and I could just listen to that alone.

Kelly hasn’t released an album since 2011, Stronger, not counting her Christmas album and greatest hits compilation. In my opinion this is how you make a comeback. It’s a nice upbeat song that is radio friendly. I’m interested in hearing what else she has to offer.

During her interview with Elvis Duran and The Morning Show to promote the single she announced her new album will be titled Piece by PieceIt set to be released the first week in March and she plans to hit the road this summer. I’m ready for new Kelly Clarkson music.
