Last year Queen Bey set the stage on fire with a medley of her self-titled album as she was honored with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. The year before Justin Timberlake performed a medley of his hits and even reunited with his NSync bandmates as he was honored. This year at the 2015 VMAs, Kanye West will be honored with the award.
Welcome to another edition of This Week In Music (my typical intro). Click the links below for my posts of the week.
I have quite a bit to mention so let’s get right into it. The Billboard Awards finalists have been released and Taylor Swift leads the pack with 14 nominations. There’s no surprise there with the success of 1989 which spends its 23rd consecutive week on the Billboard 200 this week. Sam Smith has 13 nominations, followed by Iggy Azalea with 12 nominations. ‘All About That Bass’ singer, Meghan Trainor, isn’t to be left out with 9 nominations. For full list of nominees, click HERE. Prayers go out to Taylor as she announced that her mother has been diagnosed with cancer. The Billboard Music Awards air May 17th and will be hosted by Ludacris and Pete Wentz.
Moving on to chart news, Wale has dethroned Kendrick Lamar who had the #1 spot for two weeks. Wale’s, The Album About Nothing, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 100,00 copies sold in its first week. The biggest triumph on the chart would have to be the Furious 7 Soundtrack which catapulted to #2 from it’s last weeks position of 17. In at #3 is Ludacris’, Ludaversal. As for the Hot 100, Mark Monsoon and Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk,’ still sits pretty at #1. Maybe just maybe it will tie with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s ‘One Sweet Day’ which has the record of 16 weeks.
As for new collabs on the way, fans of Danity Kane have watched the group dwindle like a countdown, 5..4…3…2. Yes the group is officially no more and the reunion is short lived. As a group Danity Kane released 2 albums under Bad Boy Records. My personal favorite was their second, Welcome to the Dollhouse. After watching Making The Band 3 and seeing how the group was formed I was a fan instantaneously once the group was finally formed. Now it’s just down to two ladies, Shannon Bex and Aubrey O’Day, who know call themselves DumBlonde. Interesting to see how this will pan out.
In other collabs, Britney Spears is teaming with Iggy Azalea in what can be a comeback or a flop with a track titled, ‘Pretty Girls.’ Britney Spears has rejuvenated her career successfully in the past, but could this collab be another chart topper? From the pictures on the internet, I’m not too sure. Hopefully the song if nothing else is decent enough for radio buzz. Maybe it’ll last longer than the short lived Fergie return.
Lastly, congrats are in order to new parents Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. They welcomed a baby boy over the weekend, Silas Ryan Timberlake.
Until next week…

Michael Jackson’s second posthumous album, Xscape, was recently released (May 13th) and out of the songs that I have heard so far I am really in love with the vibe of ‘Love Never Felt So Good’ featuring Justin Timberlake. The video is what I expected, a tribute to Michael. What other way was there to do it? I do wish there was more of the choreo in front of his videos. I do like how they panned in and out from Michael’s videos to dancers doing his moves. It was really what I expected the video to be. There’s not much to say about a tribute. There was lots and lots of dancing and tons of smiling faces for a song as joyful as this. Check it out below:
I titled this post April Rotation instead of April Favorites being that this is a cumulative list of songs I’ve been enjoying over the past month. Enjoy the list & listen to my new fav below:
- Sia – ‘Chandelier’
- Justin Timberlake – ‘Not a Bad Thing’
- Disclosure (f. Sam Smith) – ‘Latch’
- will.i.am. f/ Miley Cyrus, French Montana & Wiz Khalifa – ‘Feeling Myself’
- 2 Chainz – ‘Used 2’
- Nico & Vinz – ‘Am I Wrong’
Let me say YES to a J. Hud track that I am actually LOVING! I have not been a fan of anything she’s released as of late and I was not planning to like this Timbaland assisted track. The last track she released, ‘I Can’t Describe (How I Feel)’, had me uninterested in her new project from the gate, but this new track she’s released has me wanting more.
The vibe of the track lyrically and musically is just perfection. I really like this for J. Hud and it’s a good direction for her to go in to try out different sounds and to not be tied down to ballads. I’m not going to say I don’t want to hear her singing about being happy, in love, etc. it’s just that sometimes the lyrics can be there, but the beat isn’t. Other times it’s vice versa. I just love the ENTIRE vibe of this track. Her throwing in a f bomb doesn’t hurt either. It’s the way it was done that makes it not so noticeable. I also hear a little Justin Timberlake in the background.
Absolutely love this track and I wouldn’t mind another J. Hud/Timbo collab if it’s going to sound like this. Will this hit the radio? It could with the right push. Only time will tell.
