Here’s another edition of This Week In Music. Click HERE for the previous edition and click the links below for other news this week:

mgid-uma-image-mtv.com-10116169In other news, Destiny’s Child has reunited, yet again, this time at the 30th annual Stellar Awards for a performance of Michelle’s ‘Say Yes’ (click HERE for that video review). From the Instagram clips Beyoncé was feeling herself last night (pun intended), but it was great to see all three on stage. Every artist has a zone and it was clear that Michelle was comfortable on stage, they all sounded great, and they were having fun. The show will air on TV One, April 5th. In the meantime, check out a snippet of the performance HERE.

Rihanna, Jim Parsons Plano Home premiere_Photo Credit Thomas Garza for OhSoCynthia.comIt’s been a big week for Rihanna as she’s released a new single off her upcoming album (link above) and her animation debut, ‘Home’, has topped the box office with $54 million in its opening. She’s featured not only in the movie, but 3 songs on the soundtrack. Other artists featured include Jennifer Lopez and Charlie XCX.  Click HERE to purchase soundtrack and be sure to check out the movie in theaters.

Moving on to chart news, congrats to Kendrick Lamar for having the #1 album in the country. To Pimp a Butterfly tops the Billboard 200 with 324,000 copies sold in its first week, The album was released a week prior to its scheduled date, but that didn’t stop it from topping the charts. In at #2 is last weeks #1 album, the Empire Soudntrack. Over on the Hot 100, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars are sitting comfortably with ‘Uptown Funk’ (check out the remix HERE). So far the track has been on the chart for 17 weeks.

The iHeartRadio Music awards air tonight (3/29) so be on the lookout this week for a review of the performances.

Video Review: J. Lo x Iggy Azalea, ‘Booty (Remix)’

tumblr_nbek7pkmiB1ti9nr8o2_500First of let me just give a round of applause to J. Lo for being CLASSY with her ‘biggest asset’. The video really made me fall in love with the song. It’s catchy as hell and THIS is the version that should’ve been pushed from the get go. It’s not trashy and Ms. Jennifer Lopez SHOWS exactly how great you can look at 45 even after having twins.

So the video starts out with a count down then it goes into the video which made me dizzy in certain scenes. No it’s not a Kanye, ‘All of the Lights’, but there are scenes were the scenes move so fast that it even had my head spinning. J. Lo does her thing and then insert Iggy Azalea who does her thing as well. I really just love the overall production, how it sticks to black and white ensembles and really the only pop of color you get is J. Lo’s lip gloss / red lip stick.

tumblr_nc4nk6f7tK1rdf2yjo2_250Of course this video is compared to Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda (CLICK HERE for that review), but HONESTLY this video is way better. Nicki’s was all over the place with different scenes which is fine, but this is a classy way of showing off an ass. There was touching between J. Lo & Iggy, but it wasn’t demeaning nor overly sexual to where sit was awkward to watch. While ‘Anaconda’ has grown on me, as a lot of Nicki Minaj songs do, I do think that the video was over the top and that J. Lo won the battle with this one. Of course guys will gawk and say Nicki’s was better clearly because of the additional ass shots & Drake lap dance, BUT I prefer this one over the latter.

Check out the video below:

Single Review: Jennifer Lopez, ‘Booty (Remix)’

booty-remixJennifer Lopez announced Sunday (8.24) at the VMAs that the ‘Booty (Remix)’ would be coming soon and here it is just in time for new music Tuesday. She teams up with Iggy Azalea who is storming social media and the airwaves off the success of ‘Fancy’, her feature on ‘Problem’ and her latest single ‘Black Widow’ with Rita Ora. When I saw the artwork for the single I love how simple it looks. The ladies are glistening with the self tan and I only hoped that the song was good being that I wasn’t a fan of the original.

To my surprise, I actually like the track. To know that there’s a video coming for this makes it that much better. Iggy has spit better bars, but she does add a little something extra to the track. The beat also makes up for the lackluster lyrics. I won’t say it’s an end of summer fav, but I do like it.

Take a listen to the track below:

2014 MTV VMAs Review

MTV-VMAs-Logo-2The 2014 VMAs aired last night (8.24) and my overall thought of the show is that it was just alright. The camera views that the VMAs had online really made the show. Celebrities can claim there’s no shade, but their faces said otherwise. There really weren’t that many celebrities in attendance and the layout of the stage annoys me. I like the traditional stage of the stage then the audience in rows. I don’t like the whole abstract stage thing. I won’t review every little detail, BUT let’s get into the performances. WARNING — This will be a long post and nothing is in order except for intro and closing.

ariana-nicki-jessie-j_612x381The show opened with a triple performance from Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Jessie J. Ariana came out and did ‘Break Free’ and she sounded great. She later took home the award for Best Female Pop Video. Then Nicki Minaj came out and performed ‘Anaconda’ and none of the celebs in attendance looked impressed and neither was I. Switch to Jessie J coming out in an ensemble similar to what she wore in the ‘Bang Bang’ video (CLICK HERE for my review) and she sounded pretty good.. Here comes Nicki Minaj holding her dress together. She didn’t have enough time to get it zipped. It could’ve been a better ending had he dress been zipped and Jessie J didn’t seem to be too pleased with the performance based on the backstage cam. Nicki’s outfit for ‘Anaconda’ should’ve just been cute shorts without the fishnets because she would’ve been able to get changed faster.

Moving on to Taylor Swift, her song, ‘Shake It Off’ is cute (CLICK HERE for my review), but no one seemed to be amazed by her performance either. Taylor has done better and it was just a bit off. Like I know she’s stepping out and doing something different, but she’s had better performances. Another bore for me. Maroon 5 performed ‘Maps’ elsewhere and it was another ‘alright’ performance for me. Be on the lookout for my review of their new track, ‘Animals’, going live this week. Sam Smith performed ‘Stay With Me’ and I love his voice. I didn’t expect his performance to be a big production. (CLICK HERE for my review of In The Lonely Hour).

Usher performed his latest single, ‘She Came To Give It To You’ (CLICK HERE for my track review). I was really hoping he would’ve done a medley or ‘Good Kisser’. Although I love the track I just wanted to see something else. Nicki came back out in a white ensemble and was twerking on Usher. The performance was decent and kudos to Usher for not sounding winded. Be on the lookout for my review on his new single, ‘Believe Me’ going live this week.

1408936099108_Image_galleryImage_INGLEWOOD_CA_AUGUST_24_SiIggy Azalea had my second favorite performance of the night as she performed along side Rita Ora who SANG and they both looked great in those matching one pieces. Iggy was NOT lip rapping she was going full out. I love how she was in her element. She looked great on the red carpet, great on stage, and great in her second look of the night. Kudos to Iggy. Unfortunately she didn’t take home a moon man for ‘Fancy’.

vmas2Lastly, Queen Bey came out an performed her entire self-titled album. The way that she was able to move from song to song was amazing. I wasn’t a huge fan of her outfit, but I love that she took a chance and did something she hadn’t done before. Everyone in attendance was jamming along and her daughter Blue Ivy was turnt up doing her dance to ‘Flawless’. Beyoncé is one of the greatest performers of all time as she pours her heart out on the stage every time she touches it. After Beyoncé’s performance the show just ended. No goodnight just straight into a replay of the show.

vmas

As for who had the best look my pick goes to Jennifer Lopez. For her to be 45. Worst dressed definitely goes to Katy Perry and Riff Raff for their horrible tribute to denim. It was horrible when Justin & Britney did it and it was even worse for them to recreate it.  Iggy Azalea looked great and as great as Amber Rose looked in her dress, I think it was a bit trashy for the VMAs. I wasn’t a fan of Kim K.’s look and she looked bored to be there. Rita Ora looked great in the red dress that was worn by Rihanna in a different color previously. Taylor Swift should’ve worn something else. That one piece did her body no justice. Nicki looked cute in her leopard dress. Major step up from what she looked liked at the 2012 VMAs. She looked human. My fav couple on the carpet was Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks. I love those two together and they looked great in coordinating white outfits.

jesse_mileycyrus_thumbAs for the winners I’m not sure if the winners are chosen based off the popularity of the song or the actual video. Ariana Grande won for Best Pop Video, but there was nothing special about ‘Problem’. I think ‘Fancy’ was better conceptually than that. Miley Cyrus won Video of the Year for ‘Wrecking Ball’ and while it was a beautiful song, the video had it’s raunchy moments. Great song though. Kudos to Miley for allowing the former homeless teen to share his story and share the message of the foundation, ‘My Friend’s Place’.

Overall it was bleh. People compare the MTV VMAs to the BET Awards and I must say that they both have gone downhill. Award shows are not like they used to be, artists do not show up and support. If artists don’t show up to the Grammy’s, the mecca of music awards, why would they show up to basic award shows? For full list of winners CLICK HERE.

Until next year…

This Week In Music (V.14): Chart News, New Music, & More

Well, here it is, another edition of This Week in Music (#TWIM). Let’s get right to it. Just like I mention in mosts posts, click the links!

lana-del-reyThe Billboard 200 numbers came in and Lana Del Rey topped the chart with Ultraviolence selling 188,000 copies making it her first album to top the chart. Sam Smith became the first solo artist since Phillip Phillips released The World From the Side of the Moon (2012), to have the largest debut. In The Lonely Hour sold 166,000 copies, placing Sam Smith in at #2. Lincoln Park’s, Hunting Party, debuted at #3 will 110,000 copies sold. It is their first non #1 album since their 2002 debut. The Frozen soundtrack is STILL in the Top 10 this week. It places at #4 moving down a spot from the previous week. Despite that, 26 consecutive weeks in the top 10, for a soundtrack, isn’t shabby at all. Jennifer Lopez charted her lowest album sales to date with the release of A.K.A. selling 33,000 copies although it was her 8th consecutive Top 10 album.

Moving on to the Hot 100, Iggy Azalea is still atop of the chart with ‘Fancy‘. In at #2 is ‘Problem‘ and rounding off the top 3 is one of my FAVORITE tracks of the year thus far, Magic!’s ‘Rude‘.

ariana-my-everything-coverThere are two new albums that have been confirmed for a later release this year. First up is Ariana Grande. She will be releasing her sophomore album titled, My Everything. It hasn’t been a year since she’s released her debut, Yours Trulybut with the buzz around ‘Problem’ it only makes sense for her to push out a new album while the buzz is there. She announced this during an interview with Ryan Seacrest and discussed the direction of the album:

“I feel like each song is so strongly themed that I just wanted to have a very simple overall cover. It’s inspired by Jane Fonda in Barbarella and Star Wars and space. It’s more throwback, campy.”

She’s readying the video for her second single titled ‘Break Free’ which features Zedd and has a 1960s vibe. I can see where she’s going since the video for ‘Problem’ looked like a snippet from That 70s Show.

Selena Gomez is readying another album as she exits out of her Disney deal with Hollywood Records. The album will be a greatest hits album featuring ‘Love You Like a Love Song’, ‘Come and Get It’, plus more (of course). She hasn’t been out long enough in my opinion to have a greatest hits album, BUT I guess with this deal closing it makes sense. Even though she hasn’t really put a dent in her musical career she does have quite a bit of hits that I do enjoy.

As for new albums coming Tuesday: Trey Songz, TriggaRobin Thicke, Paulaand Tessanne Chin, Count On MY Love. I will definitely be doing an album review on Trigga, I have no interest in Robin Thicke’s love letter to Paula and I will give a listen to Tessanne Chin’s debut. Not sure if I’ll be doing an album review.

Last week I wrote about Zenday Coleman being casted as Aaliyah and ALL the controversy surrounding it. Well, Zendaya has dropped out of filming the movie. Her rep released a statement:

“Zendaya is no longer involved in the project. Aaliyah has always been an inspiration to Zendaya,” the source said. “She was honored to portray her and pay tribute to her. If she is going to do it, she wants to do it right.”

With all the controversy with Aaliyah’s family more so than the mumbling and grumbling from Aaliyah fans, I can’t blame Zendaya for backing out. Interested in seeing if this movie will surface.

Alright let’s wrap this edition up; just a couple more things. Beyonce and Jay Z have officially stated their ‘On The Run’ tour and from pictures and Instagram videos, what a TOUR it is. They released a behind the scenes of the tour so check it out below:

In new music there hasn’t been much that’s caught my eye. Let’s see Jeremih released a remix to ‘Don’t Tell ‘Em’ featuring G-Unit. Not a fan of the G-Unit reunion, but I like the song, more so the beat. Lil Wayne released a track called ‘Krazy’ which is HORRIBLE. I don’t know the direction he’s going with the Carter V, but at this point I’m not interested. Then there’s a new artist I came across, who’s not really new, by the name of G-Eazy. He has a track titled, ‘Lotta That’ featuring A$AP Ferg & Danny Smith. Take a listen below and tune in next week for another edition of This Week in Music DEDICATED to the BET AWARDS!
