Sound OFF: Hot 97 versus Power 105.1

Welcome to a new series here on the blog. Since rebranding and renaming my blog Chaotic Critic, I’ve done a lot of planner and other lifestyle posts, but the essence of the name has yet to be showcased. I still want to do reviews and give my take on certain life topics, but there’s so much going on in the blogosphere, on the news, via Twitter or Instagram, that I want to share my thoughts. These are my opinions, no holds barred, real talk.

This Week In Music (V.13): Videos, Biopics, & MORE

There’s been a LOT going on this week, hence why my posts have been sparse, but as always welcome to another edition of This Week In Music. Let’s jump to chart news quickly. Please be sure to click links that’ll take you directly to the album/track.

As for the Billboard 200, Jack White’s Lazaretto came in at #1, Miranda Lambert (Platinummoved to #2, and Frozen is in at #3. Iggy Azalea’s, ‘Fancy‘, is still atop the Hot 100 for 4th week and ‘Problem‘ still sits in at #2. Magic!’s, ‘Rude‘, moves up for spots to #3. Over on Billboard you can vote in the 2014  Mid-Year Music Poll. Click here to do so.

Back to Iggy Azalea for a moment, she is very busy on the charts and not just the pop one. She’s teamed with Hustle Gang General, T.I., for their latest collab ‘No Mediocre‘. I reviewed the track, but be sure to check out the video below. As for my thoughts, it was okay; nothing special.

Keeping along the lines of new videos this week, Trey Songz has released a new video for yet another single off Trigga titled, ‘Foreign’. I wasn’t really expecting to like this song as much as I do, but it’s catchy, the beat is there, and Trey Songz in the video is a major plus. The video starts the same as his ‘SmartPhones‘ video did and then he heads to a video shoot where he dances around with various women which matches every word he says, he likes his women foreign. Check out the video below. Trigga hits stores/online July 1st.

Mary J. Blige released two videos this week in support of the Think Like a Man Too Soundtrack. The soundtrack features 14 original songs from Mary J. Blige. The first video released was the cover of Shalamar’s ‘A Night to Remember’. The video featured a cameo from style ICON, June Ambrose. Then there’s the video for ‘Suitcase’ which was AMAZING! I’m very happy about this MJB compilation and YES a ‘My Top 5’ will be coming soon. Check out both videos below:

nwa-castNow switching gears a little bit let’s get into TWO biopics that will be coming soon, well in 2015. The first is that of N.W.A. titled Straight Outta Compton. Dr. Dre will be played by Corey Hawkins, Cube by his son O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Eazy E by Jason Mitchell. The film will be directed by Gary Gray, production starts this summer, and is set to hit theaters August 14, 2015.

Moving on to the next biopic and one of the most controversial stories of the week is that of Zendaya Coleman begin casted to play Aaliyah in the upcoming biopic about her life. Now the controversy is that Zendaya is not ‘black enough’ to play Aaliyah. No her skin tone is not spot on to that of Aaliyah’s but it just utterly rude to make a comment as such. Personally, I feel the same way about Aaliyah having a biopic straight to TV (Lifetime) as I am with Whitney Houston’s going straight to TV. Artist of a certain caliber need to go to a theater. Even if it’s for a few private screenings, etc.,I think a movie screening is appropriate as well. Now Aaliyah’s family is fighting the production of this film not as far as casting, but as far as the movie not being on a theatrical level yet being put straight to TV. Aaliyah’s family is very territorial over her name, as they should be, BUT if this movie is gong to be stopped for going to Lifetime it’d be great to get one in theaters sometime soon.

angiemartinez-newheader copyLastly, it all comes down to the HEADLINE for me of the week: ‘Angie Martinez Resigns from Hot 97’. after studying broadcast journalism, primarily radio, throughout college I’ve been obsessed with the formation of radio and my favorites have always been Wendy Williams and Angie Martinez. I loved that Wendy Williams asked any and everything not caring and not holding back and then there was Angie Martinez who was like every superstars friend as her essence just radiated that. After 25 years on Hot 97 and the past 15 as the Voice of NY from 3pm-7pm (The Angie Martinez Show), she has resigned and moved on to RIVAL Power 105.1. Her friends at Hot 97 seem to understand,I mean not that they have a choice. The difference between Hot 97 is like comparing it to that of a local grocery store and Walmart. There’s local attention then theirs global. Moving from Hot 97 to Power 105.1 expands Angie Martinez’s brand as its owned by Clear Channel. No word on her start date just yet, but she’ll be taking over the 2pm spot currently held by DJ Prostyle and then she’ll be on the sister station Miami’s 103.5 FM (The Beat of Miami). Congrats to Angie for making such a huge move.

This Week In Music (V.2): Drake x Hot 97 x Frozen

Another week has passed and it’s OFFICIALLY APRIL! Let’s get into the music recap of the week.

Drake dropped TWO tracks ‘Draft Day’ and ‘Days In The East.’ ‘Draft Day’ samples Lauryn Hill’s ‘Doo-Wop (That Thing)’ and ‘Days in The East’ has that ‘Take Care’ vibe. Both tracks for me are bleh for me. I do prefer ‘Draft Day’ over the other track. I don’t know how to feel about the music Drake releases. Although I’ have all 3 albums, I’ve never been the biggest fan. I respect him as an artist, but I’m not sure how to feel about the direction of his new project. I love what’s on the radios then I get the album and it’s like, ok for me. This time it’s reversed. I did like ‘Trophies’ and his ‘We Made It’ freestyle. These two tracks are just bleh for me. Maybe they’ll grow on me, maybe not. Only time will tell. Take a listen below:

In other new music news, the remake of Diana Ross’, ‘I’m Coming Out’ came by way of Iggy Azalea and Keyshia Cole. The sound will not be featured on Cole’s new album or Iggy’s debut, but is in the forefront for the soundtrack to the new movie, The Other Woman. My thought? I HATE IT! I do not like the remake of all. Not a fan. Keyshia’s vocals sound strained and Iggy oh Iggy how I love her, it’s just her  bars did NOTHING for me on this. You be the judge below:

Lastly and my favorite music release of the week is Marsha Ambrosius’, ‘Run.’ I absolutely love her voice and this song vocally and lyrically is AMAZING. It will be featured on her upcoming LP. Take a listen below:

Now let’s briefly talk about the AMAZING week that NYCs Hot 97 is having. The new series on VH1, “This Is Hot 97,” premiered on VH1 this past Monday (March 31) and the lineup for their annual Summer Jam was released.

This-Is-Hot-97-VH1-600x402

If you guys are not aware of what Summer Jam is, in a short version, it’s a mega hip hop concert which takes place at Met Life Stadium. I went to Summer Jam in 2011 and the experience, well I blogged about it so click here to read on that. I’m 50/50 on whether I want to go this year. The lineup is ok for me. Check out the lineups below for both the festival & stadium stages.

When it comes to the Billboard charts there have been MANY albums to top the charts and set records and this week another milestone came for the Frozen Soundtrack. The album became the first to spend the most weeks at #1 since Adele’s 21. It becomes the 20th album, since the creation of Nielsen SoundScan in 1991, to spend at least 8 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200. I personally did not understand the hype of the movie until I watched it and let me be the first to say it is the best animated movie I’ve seen in a long time from the message to the animation itself. Well deserving of the Oscar wins it received. Take a listen to the Oscar winning track for Best Original Song, ‘Let It Go.’

Lastly in music news for the week

50 Cent v. Steve Stoute

Steve Stoute has been in the forefront as of late in a promotional sense for his VH1 documentary, Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop based off his book under a similar title. I talked all about the documentary in my initial post here. While on his press run Stoute stopped by NYCs Hot 97 for an interview with Angie Martinez and he was asked who he thought were the 5 most influential rappers right now.

Dre, Jay, Puff… Kanye… hmph! Really influential, like really changing the culture. Yeah, probably that. There’s guys that are coming up. Rick Ross. Pharrell, if you want to say that. There’ guys coming up. Drakes and Rick Ross who are getting there. To be able to shift tides globally. Bigger than just making hit songs. Drake has a lot of hit songs. Changing things. Making people change the way they dress. That kind of thing. Finding ways to capitalize off of changing markets. Those are the guys. It’s really four guys.

Pharrell is probably there now. I would say Pharrell as well He’s more niche. He’s smart. So smart. But he chooses his lanes well. He definitely change the way people dress a couple of times. From trucker hats to those Bathing Ape sneakers he brought to America. To his contribution, BBC’s been great. I think he’s there but it’s much more niche than it is anything else. It’s global but it’s niche. But those are the four guys who definitely put it down day in and day out. And it’s like 20 years now. I hate even saying that because it just sounds ridiculous, but it’s really 20 years.

In the midst of this 50 Cent was brought up and while Stoute’s comments were valid and he’s by all means entitled to his opinion, one would say he took a few shots.

He hasn’t had a hit in a really long time. He has not made anything musically that’s changed in a very long time. I feel like he’s always gearing up for something that never happens. I think that he’s trying to get back. But those guys… music is a great platform. If you’re an entrepreneur, you have… you’re currently active making music, you’re currently active touching people with albums, it makes it much easier to venture into business deals that will become successful using the music to parlay to get it done. And without having music that’s meaningful over the last, probably the last great song he’s made was “I Get Money”? Right? You know how long ago…? Kanye’s put out three albums, four albums since then.

Angie commented that 50 would probably mention Stoute in a song and his response was:

Great! Hopefully it gets on the radio!

Check out the clip below:

Yes, 50 Cent is not doing THE MOST right now and yes in standings Kanye could be considered more influential. This does not go to say that 50 Cent was not an influential key of hip hop from 2003-2008 because he most certainly was. He was everywhere with the music, fashion, endorsements, he was doing it all. Times have changed and music has changed as far as sound. For Stoute to THROW (subliminal) SHOTS and not expect for 50 to respond, he should’ve thought that through. When 50 saw him at the Knicks game he clearly wasted no time confronting him about his comments. I do not agree with how 50 confronted the situation, but he did it the way he knew how. Who knows when the two would’ve  crossed paths so 50 had to get his thoughts off his chest. I guess there was no avoiding it, but it all boils down to me personally for Stoute to be confronted from 50. When you talk about someone’s career and voice your opinion that’s one thing. To make jokes at what they are and are not doing and try to quickly diffuse the situation AFTER you were joking around and what not on radio is different as well. It’s interesting that some people can’t back up what they say. Again Stoute has a right to his opinions, but if he was comfortable enough to voice his opinion on radio he should’ve known that there would be a reaction to his actions.

Single Review: Iggy Azalea x Charli XCX, ‘Fancy’

https://soundcloud.com/iggy-azalea-official/fancy-mistajam

I have seen Iggy Azalea more on Instagram posting pics more than posting music. At first I won’t say that I didn’t like her vibe/swag/rhymes, I just didn’t know who she was. Once I found out she was affiliated with Hustle Gang I decided to give her music a listen. I like her tracks ‘Work’ and ‘Bounce’ and aside from making tracks here and there her music was credible enough for her to open for Beyoncé.

As for this track I first heard it on NYC, Hot 97 Morning Show segment, Battle of the Beats. I like it on first listen mainly because of the beat (sucker for a beat). The reviews were mixed on the show as far as the beat being dope, but Iggy rapping as if she’s from the south. No she does not speak how she raps, but I still think her flow is cool. This track is something I could hear on the radio compared to that of her other work, but NY is a hard market to get your music played on so I don’t expect to hear it on the airwaves in a rotation. My favorite part 1:18-1:28. Who knows when her debut album will appear. Right now she’s just an Aussie beauty that happens to rap. Female rappers are non-existent which sucks because their are some talented female rappers on the underground, BUT there’s always ONE female MC to be at the top.
