This Week In Music (V.28): Billboard Awards, Future Collabs, & MORE!

Welcome to another edition of This Week In Music (my typical intro). Click the links below for my posts of the week.

1428449191197I have quite a bit to mention so let’s get right into it. The Billboard Awards finalists have been released and Taylor Swift leads the pack with 14 nominations. There’s no surprise there with the success of 1989 which spends its 23rd consecutive week on the Billboard 200 this week. Sam Smith has 13 nominations, followed by Iggy Azalea with 12 nominations. ‘All About That Bass’ singer, Meghan Trainor, isn’t to be left out with 9 nominations. For full list of nominees, click HERE. Prayers go out to Taylor as she announced that her mother has been diagnosed with cancer. The Billboard Music Awards air May 17th and will be hosted by Ludacris and Pete Wentz.

IFWT_WALE1Moving on to chart news, Wale has dethroned Kendrick Lamar who had the #1 spot for two weeks. Wale’s, The Album About Nothing, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 100,00 copies sold in its first week. The biggest triumph on the chart would have to be the Furious 7 Soundtrack which catapulted to #2 from it’s last weeks position of 17. In at #3 is Ludacris’, Ludaversal. As for the Hot 100, Mark Monsoon and Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk,’ still sits pretty at #1. Maybe just maybe it will tie with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s ‘One Sweet Day’ which has the record of 16 weeks.

cydrus_2015-Mar-29As for new collabs on the way, fans of Danity Kane have watched the group dwindle like a countdown, 5..4…3…2. Yes the group is officially no more and the reunion is short lived. As a group Danity Kane released 2 albums under Bad Boy Records. My personal favorite was their second, Welcome to the Dollhouse. After watching Making The Band 3 and seeing how the group was formed I was a fan instantaneously once the group was finally formed. Now it’s just down to two ladies, Shannon Bex and Aubrey O’Day, who know call themselves DumBlonde. Interesting to see how this will pan out.

Iggy Azalea and Britney Spears Film a Music Video on Ventura BlvdIn other collabs, Britney Spears is teaming with Iggy Azalea in what can be a comeback or a flop with a track titled, ‘Pretty Girls.’ Britney Spears has rejuvenated her career successfully in the past, but could this collab be another chart topper? From the pictures on the internet, I’m not too sure. Hopefully the song if nothing else is decent enough for radio buzz. Maybe it’ll last longer than the short lived Fergie return.

Lastly, congrats are in order to new parents Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. They welcomed a baby boy over the weekend, Silas Ryan Timberlake.

Until next week…

DK3 – The Album

Danity-Kane-DK3-2014-1500x1500-Official-300x300I wrote about the beef within the remanding members of Danity Kane: Dawn Richard, Aubrey O’Day, and Shannon Bex. It came down to a physical fight between the Dawn and Aubrey and it came down to Dawn vs. Aubrey & Shannon. As they were gearing up for this big return in a EDM filled music scene with catchy rap songs and heavy pop, it made me wonder if the girls would resurface as a threesome to begin with. Read more about the situation in my post, This Week In Music [V.20]: Musical Beef.

Here it is, over a month after the incident, and the album is set to be released. From the album cover that’s leaked, whether it’s official or unofficial along with the snippets it’s clear that Dawn was not scrapped from the project.

As a Danity Kane fan from the beginning I won’t lie and say that I’ve never wanted to see a reunion. I’ve watched the group come together from the Making the Band days, but the reunion I wanted was with all five. When pictures first leaked, yeah I was excited like other DK fans, but there was no D. Woods. Ok, cool the group is reuniting as a foursome. Then another bomb dropped and Aundrea was leaving to start a family. Looks like timing was never right. No D.Woods, no Aundrea, and fans really thought there’d be no more issues within the new Danity Kane, now DK3? With all the lineup drops, it seemed to good to be true and indeed it was.

It’s unfortunate what happened between the three remaining ladies as they are all grown women and any issues could have been resolved in a different way. Again, girls have fall into the stereotype of never ending drama and this situation is no different. There are two sides to every story and as both sides have been addressed up until now there was no word on the album. While Aubrey & Shannon are doing this for the fans, has Dawn been notified? Is she just finding out via social media like everyone else? Hopefully this gets sorted and fast or this can get really messy. It’s already messy and I’m really not interested anymore.

DK3 is ‘expected’ to drop October 28th. Pre-order now on iTunes and Amazon. Check out the track list below + snippets:

  1. ‘Rhythm of Love’
  2. ‘Lemonade’ (fea. Tyga)
  3. ‘All In a Day’s Work’
  4. ‘Rage’
  5. ‘Tell Me’
  6. ‘Two Sides’
  7. ‘Secret Love’
  8. ‘Roulette’
  9. ‘Pieces’
  10. ‘Bye Baby’

This Week In Music [V.20] — Musical Beef

Welcome to another edition of This Week In Music (#TWIM). As always be sure to click the links. First up, let’s recap what’s been covered so far this week:

kim8As for what else has been happening this week, Lil’ Kim has sure been adding more fuel to the fire with her never ending beef with Nicki Minaj. Being that Remy Ma has been released you’d think we’d be hearing more and more from her. Well, ever since that ‘Flawless (Remix)’ dropped with Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj, Lil’ Kim has been dropping something ever day. The question is not as far as does she still have the talent. The question is, “Is Lil’ Kim of any relevance?” It’s very hard for females in general to empower each other. It’s always some form of competition. Fans have been wanting Nicki & Kim on a track for ages. With the beef between the two I doubt that will ever happen. She’s done her ‘Flawless’ Remix, but she didn’t stop there. She went on to do ‘Identity Theft’ with Nicki’s face as the artwork. With pictures provided via Kim’s instagram, it’s true, Nicki Minaj did swagger jack. The only difference is that Nicki Minaj took it to a whole different level. Her looking like a CLOWN majority of the time is what got her noticed. Who knows how this whole Lil’ Kim thing is gonna go down. Any other time she’s gone at Nicki, it’s been swept under the rug. I honestly see this time no different. For those interested, her mixtape, Hardcore 2K14, drops 9/11 and she’ll be going on a MIXTAPE TOUR! A mixtape tour, if anyone was interested.

dkThe beef doesn’t stop there this week. For anyone that were fans of Danity Kane, you’ll have to live in the memories of the Bad Boy days because they have officially broken up, again. It all started with five to be put back together without D. Woods bringing them down to four. Then Aundrea dropped out to start her family leaving Dawn, Aubrey, and Shannon. They dropped their single ‘Lemondade’ and while I was excited to hear they were joining together again the buzz around their reunion was short-lived. Just shy of year after announcing their reunion, t’s all over. What ended it? Well rumor has it that Shannon and Aubrey were recording and having private meetings behind Dawn’s back. Dawn walked into one of those private sessions and yeah, everything went downhill. There was a statement released via the DK website by Aubrey and Shannon that Danity Kane was indeed over. This is also after Shannon and Aubrey made a video saying happy birthday to Dawn and saying they had made it through the “storm.” Here’s a snippet of the joint statement between Shannon and Aubrey via the DK site.

“We know it must be devastating for our fans to have spent the last twelve months supporting our every move, and for that we cannot apologize enough.  We share your frustration and anger!  We spent a year living on each other’s couches, sacrificing any solo opportunity that came our way, finally finished our comeback album, and were days away from filming three music videos for you that would have played out as a short movie.  We lived on calls, traded endless e-mails, and sat in meeting after meeting to bring together an amazing team of producers, agents, directors, and styling teams with no manager in place.  We were at the finish line.  We wish, more than anything, that our time, our team’s time, and most importantly your time as fans, was not taken for granted and carelessly disregarded.  If this ending was in our control, please understand that we would have done everything in our power to move things forward.  You have become our family, and regardless of these unfortunate circumstances, we hope all of you treat one another as family, as we have built connections that cannot possibly be conveyed in words.  Our journey, and the love we have built together as fans and artists, is a truth that all of us will forever hold close to our hearts. ”

No statement has been released from Dawn regarding the situation and who knows if fans will ever get one. Maybe one day the album that’s “completed” will be released. Clearly Dawn is deemed to be ‘selfish’ according to the other two. To read their full statements CLICK HERE.

Until next time..

This Week In Music (V.8): Track Overload

There’s been quite a bit of new tracks released this past week and I thought what better way to give my input on all of them than just to do a MASSIVe post with new music & my thoughts. Sounds good? Great. Here we go.

So there’s been a fe remixes released this week. I won’t go in depth with a  review of those so just check those out below: ‘Loyal (Chris Brown) ‘ , ‘Yayo’ (Snootie Wild) , and ‘Up Down’ (T-Pain).

It’s been seven years since T-Pain has hit the music scene and his signature is all about clubs & liquor. His new track, ‘Drankin Patna’, is a bit slower than ‘Up Down’ and of course it’s auto tuned infused. The song overall is ok. I’m just SO OVER the strip club songs that hit the radio waves. I will say that T-Pain has stay true to the music he produces solo wise. Lyrically it’s nothing special.

I recently reviewed Trey Songz new video, ‘Smartphones’, and as he gears up to release his sixth studio album he’s back with another track ‘Foreign’. Now I hated ‘Na Na’. It’s annoying after awhile and lyrically Trey can do better. Then came ‘Smartphones’ which I actually like. I prefer ballads from Trey Songz. Now he’s up to bat with ‘Foreign’ and eh, it’s a toss up for me. I’m just not feeling the direction that this project is going. Lyrically he could do SO MUCH BETTER! I like the beat though. Anyway, his album Trigga is set to be released July 1st and when you pre-order it on iTunes you’ll get ‘Na Na’, ‘Smartphones’, ‘Foreign’, and ‘Change Your Mind’.

Now I haven’t liked a song that Mariah has put out, but her new one is catchy and sure to be a radio fave. ‘Thirsty’ features Rich Homie Quan.  It reminds me a lot of ‘Obsessed’ as far as concept. It sure fits this day in time with thirsty being the catchphrase. Listening past the lyrics I really like this beat. I really like this one. If you’re not interested in hearing Rich Homie Quan there is a version without him. I prefer it without him. This song is a bit of a reach for Mariah as she is really trying to get back on the airwaves which makes sense due to the lack of buzz around ‘#Beautiful’ and ‘You’re Mine’. Could this be what gets her there? Yes. Is Mariah a better artist than this? Yes. Am I looking for something more on her album? YES!

If that wasn’t enough Mariah released another rapper-assisted track, ‘You Don’t Know What To Do’ , this time alongside MMG’s Wale. This one has an old and new school feel. She debuted this live on the Today Show as a part of their summer concert series and vocally she sounded good, at certain spots. The performance wasn’t a great representation vocally as the studio version overpowered in many instances. This one is cool, but I like ‘Thirsty’ more. I’m interested in hearing the flow on her album. Me. I am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse hits stores May 27th.

M.I.A. released her remix to Beyonce’s ‘Flawless’ after tweeting.

Beyonce camp has not replied for months > SO HERE >

‘Baddygal’ is so M.I.A. and I’m happy she released this. Great track and THAT BEAT is dope. I love this!

Now for the RACHET release of the week: Tiny & Shekinah. Yes you read it right, Tiny & Shekinah. Now Tiny is a reputable artist in her own right and Shekinah is a great hairstylist in the A. They’re best friends, you can catch their antics on “T.I. & Tiny: Family Hustle”. I never dreamed of these two getting on a track together. The tile? ‘Cut It Off’. I know that releasing music can be out of fun, to get a buzz, get a check, etc. Lyrically, come on. I find it quite funny, especially the hook.

It ain’t nothing to cut that d*** off.

Danity Kane has FINALLY released a new track. I quickly posted it a couple days ago, but never gave my take on it. First off, yes the group has gone initially from 5, to 4, and now 3 (Shannon, Aubrey, Dawn). Aundrea has announced her departure from the group which was to enjoy starting a family with her new fiancé. Congrats to her for that. DK3 released ‘Lemonade’ and samples Clipse ‘Grindin’ and in certain spots sounds like Eve’s ‘Who’s That Girl’. I like this and I can’t wait to hear more. I absolutely love Danity Kane and I really can’t wait to hear more. Nice track for a buzz.

Ariana Grande is back with yet another new track as her collab with Iggy Azalea, ‘Problem‘, storms the airwaves. ‘Boyfriend Material’ sounds a lot like Duffy’s ‘Mercy’, beat wise, and is a contrast to ‘Problem’. I will say that I like her original release ‘I Love The Way’ more than this one, but this beat works great with her voice. It doesn’t sound like she’s straining to sing. I’m interested in hearing how her debut album turns out.

Mustard on the beat hoe

DJ Mustard recently released a track off his upcoming debut, 10 Summers, but that doesn’t stop him from making beats. Jeremih gets one this time around on this track ‘Don’t Tell ‘Em’ featuring YG . A lot of the beats are starting to sound the same. This sure does sound like Kid Ink/Chris Brown, ‘Show Me’. It’s really a slowed down auto-tune infused sample of Snap!’s ‘Rhythm Is a Dancer’. I like this one though. I would like a full album from Jeremih soon.

Lil Wayne is still working hard on his upcoming album, Carter V, and he’s released a new rack ‘D’Usse’. I like the vibe of this one and I’ve always been a sucker for Weezy’s punchlines. Take a listen below:

Danity Kane will be hitting the road in May for a new tour titled #DKNOFILTERTOUR.

The symbol for the tour is our unfiltered selfies, a mosaic compiled of over 100,000 unfiltered images that our fans sent in,” said the group in a statement. “To our fans: Danity Kane is doing this for you. NEW MUSIC — Dawn Richard Remixes ‘Dark Horse’

Dawn Richard is by far an awesome talent that seems of just make every track flawless. While working on her solo project Blackheart plus new Danity Kane music, she pressed pause and covered Katy Perry’s, ‘Dark Horse.’

Here’s what she wrote via Soundcloud about the track:

It’s always fun in the lab with NoisecastleIII. We were working on Danity Kane project and decided to randomly take a break and this happened lol… For shits and giggles… Something only the hearts can appreciate. We always do things with our little twist. Done in true heart music form. Xo
