Chaotic Reads | Current ‘To Read’ List

I love audiobooks, but there are some books that I want to physically take the time to read. Audiobooks are convenient as I can listen to them while I commute or throughout my work day. There’s also digital books that work for any device whether it’s my phone or iPad. Then again, taking the time to sit on my couch for an hour at night reading and bonding with a book is something I’ve ignored for years. There are plenty of options for me to choose from and here I am again with another reading list. One day I’ll trek through all the books I want to read, but I’d love to incorporate an 30 minutes to an hour daily of no TV, no electronics, just a book.

Chaotic Reads: Coffee Table Books

I do not read nearly as much as I should. It’s as if my books have become décor collecting dust. While I have a reading list that I’ll slowly but surely get through, I have a knack for collecting coffee table books. Well, what I consider a coffee table book. These are easy to find at your local Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Ross, thrift store, etc. They’re gorgeous, filled with pictures, some have text, but ultimately they make a statement. I have a collection accumulated quite the collection that defines my personality and interests.

Chaotic Reads | Audible Favorites

I have always been fond of reading, but as I’ve gotten older I have strayed away from actual books. I love the collection that I have that spans from my Harry Potter series to various motivational books and biographies/memoirs. I have found audiobooks very helpful. I listen to them throughout my work day and commute.

Chaotic Reads | The Power Playbook

I told myself at the top of 2016 that I would attempt to read a book a month. Yeah, things that didn’t happen. I did make it through the first book I set out to read for the year, The Power Playbook: Rules for Independence, Money, and Successby La La Anthony. Quick details:

  • 245 pages
  • 18 Chapters + Intro
  • Quotes at beginning of each chapter
  • Personal experiences discussed.
  • Tips for being a power player.

I purchased this book sometime last year and I was interested in her first title, The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness, but this one I knew I couldn’t pass up. It takes me a while to get into books if I’m not feeling it. I took my time reading this one, but it definitely pulled me out of my slump of not knowing what I wanted to do career wise. To read this at the top of the year really put life into perspective for me. I decided to pull a few quotes that spoke to me along with my sharing my overall take on the book.

My passion helps me execute my purpose.

I’m passionate about writing and sharing what I love. You can feel in someones writing when they’re passionate about a subject. For me at one point it was music. That’s what I began blogging about. Then it evolved to finding my own fashion sense and trying out beauty products to be more “girly.”

While I love writing about that and sharing how I’m evolving as an adult, I’m really into organizing and planning and just being creative. That’s what Chaotic Critic has become. A platform to share how the evolution as a young adult and projects that I create and trying to stay organized and motivated. It’s an array of material, but I’m passionate about it. Taking my passion turns into my purpose of spreading that energy to others and helping them find systems that work for them. It’s actually something I’ve been doing for quite awhile.

Kill them with kindness.

This portion was early on in the book. There’s so many people that you’ll come across in life that take joy in bringing you down. Like they really get a kick out of getting under you skin. I have had to learn to let things go and stop giving people that power over me. I can’t continuously let someone get under my skin and irritate me over small things. The best way to crush them as they’re trying to crush you is to just smile it off. Let’s say it’s a work in progress for me, but I’m so over people trying to bring me down just to bring themselves up.

When I think back, most of my successes have come on the heels of being afraid to do something and then talking myself into doing it anyway.

The great thing about this book aside from La La’s personal experiences and begin able to relate to what she expressed was just how versatile she is. She started out doing radio and went about the norm route of going to college, but it wasn’t what she wanted to do. She went back to radio her opportunities kept surfacing from there. She was smart, witty, and not afraid to try something new.

I will never reach my full potential if I keep living in fear of the unknown. If I continuously dwell on the opportunity failing before it even happens, I’m hurting myself. To fully achieve all that I want, I have to step out and act on what it is that I want. If opportunities come to me along the way that’s a bonus, but I have to first start by creating my own.

There are two ways to choose your career path; Follow other’s expectations and examples of follow your own interests, talents, and passion.

I wrote an entire post on finding your lane and this book will forever be a reference for me to continuously move forward. I don’t have to live up to what others want or expect of me. I can only be me and there are people that will accept it and for those that don’t, I’m not changing for them. You have one life, live it the way you want to. Be humble, gracious, and your power will show itself.

There’s so many GEMS in this book that I will be sharing them in my Motivational Monday series for sure. The purpose of the Chaotic Reads series is to highlight books that I can relate to and spark the creativity within.

Until next time…
