Single Review: Big Sean x Drake, ‘Blessings’

Big-Sean-Blessings-2015-300x300I’m really excited about Big Sean‘s latest project. His first track, ‘I Don’t Fuck Wit You’ featuring E-40 (click HERE for that video review) was a smash although I was late on that bandwagon. This time he’s teaming up with Drake, someone else who has a highly-anticipated album on the way.

So to break down the vibe of the song I absolutely love it. I was hesitant to listen at first based off the title, but I actually enjoy the song. I was thinking the theme of the song would be similar to that of ‘Guap’ as far as a cheesy beat, but this beat is dope.

Big Sean spits about life, how far he’s come, and how people come in and out of his life. People leave you when you’re down and then try to wiggle their way back in when you’re on top as if they’ve been there the whole time. Oh, the circle of life. Of course, similar to his last track, he throws a shot as his ex, Naya Rivera.

This is that late night workin’ after three
Man this why my old girl was mad at me

I wonder just how many more tracks he will include her in. I’m over it, but for a track like this I get it.

Here come Drizzy who I thought would demolish Sean lyrically, but this song had a great balance. My favorite of his bars are the beginning:

Look, I ain’t gonna say that we back or nothin’
Cause that implies that we’re back from somethin’

Big Sean comes back on at the end talking about how he’s holding everything together on his end and all he can afford for him and those around him. The song is about all his blessings and he spits all about it.

Overall I could definitely hear this taking over the airwaves. The beat is super dope and I would love to hear some other rappers jump on it. I’d be interested in hearing Nicki Minaj’s take on it. Conceptually this track has been done before as rappers use their lives as a muse. Their creativity that they’re entitled to, but I really like this one. I’ve always loved Big Sean’s metaphors and Drake is Drake.

I wonder if this will be the project forBig Sean to get him more buzz past just singles. He puts out really great music, but can this be “the” album? Who knows. Regardless, I’m interested in listening.

Video Review: Big Sean x E-40, ‘I Don’t Fuck With You’

Photo Cred: Tumblr

Big Sean has released a video for his latest single, ‘I Don’t Fuck With You’ featuring E-40 and this one is surely a banger. I never got around to doing a track review because when the track came out I hadn’t even heard it. I just saw countless hashtags (#IDFWU) and people saying it just like Big Sean does. Once I heard it, I definitely added it to my rotation (check out my September/October Favorites).

So this is a jam packed cameo video and revolves around, my favorite, FOOTBALL! Pictures had surfaced weeks ago and I knew that Teyana Taylor, fellow G.O.O.D. Music artist would be featured. I did not know that Kanye West would be on the sideline, and be coach at that, nor was I expecting to see DJ Mustard on the field. I mean, Ye and Mustard produced the track so that’s cool. Enough rambling, let’s get into the review.

First shout out to the commentator, Big Boy from Cali’s Power 106,. Big Sean is the star high school quarterback of the Lions (no surprise D-Town) as they face the Pirates. He apparently has a ton of scholarships yet he’s having one sucky game. Coach Ye is on the sideline being super chill. I was expecting a more turnt up Ye. Hello, your star QB is messing up the game. Moving on, it flashes between Sean throwing an interception to the Pirates fans cheering and his teammates looking on and shaking their heads. Teyana Taylor looked cute on the side as a cheerleader.

The beat changes and it shows Sean getting in the car with his ‘girl’ who is from the other school which looks to be a rival, yet it shows clips of her with another dude. The shade. Back to the game, Kanye whispers “Focus” and Sean suddenly gets it together. Insert E-40 who’s another commentator in the booth. He looks great by the way. DJ Mustard takes the field (insert another ‘MateFit’ plug). He gets the ball, bulldozes into the end zone, and TOUCHDOWN!

10 seconds left and the score is 24-21, Lions down. With one second left time slows down as Big Sean plugs his new girlfriend in his rhymes and ends up taking the ball into the end zone. Excuse me, DIVES into the end zone  Hurray, Lions win. No surprise. His “girl” approaches him and he doesn’t cause a scene or anything. The thirsty chick in the stands all night tries to run up on him and pushes the other girl out the way only for Sean to push her out the way and move past both chicks. Another girl flashes him her boobs and he proudly signs them before being lifted into the air by his teammates. Great front page picture shot.

I really enjoyed the video. He had a lot of distractions in the beginning of the game, but it ultimately came down to getting focused and doing what he had to do. That’s like with any breakup. You may be down for bit, but then you have to bounce back and get back on your grind and worry about yourself. Great video.

Sean is in the process of working on his 3rd studio album and in an interview with Carson Daly stated:

You guys might be getting it for a stocking stuffer, who knows?

If he plans on throwing more shade on this one, I’m all for it. I’m ready for a new Big Sean album.

Single Review: Ariana Grande x Big Sean, ‘Best Mistake’

Ariana-Grande-ft.-Big-Sean-Right-ThereThis is the third collab between Ariana Grande and Big Sean as the two have previously collaborated on ‘Right There’ and ‘Problem’. This time around it is more interesting being that it’s been rumored that the two are dating. I knew that there was some chemistry between the two when they performed ‘Right There’ at  “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Party”Also with rumors circulating about their romance, an Instagram photo posted on both Ariana’s and Sean’s have indicated something is going on between the two.

As for this new track, ‘Best Mistake’, I like that this is a different direction for Ariana. She sings a lot of R&B fused music, but it’s very pop at the same time. Pop at 21 years old is more intriguing than R&B in this day anyway. The track has a nice vibe and her voice doesn’t annoy me. I just think that she doesn’t show enough emotion. The inflection in her tone is just not there. She sounds great, but it’s just like she’s singing the lyrics from the paper and not really feeling it. I do like the direction of the song. It isn’t horrible.

Ariana’s sophomore album, My Everything, will be in stores/online August 25th.

This Week In Music [V.18] — Video Overload #2

Welcome to another edition of THIS WEEK IN MUSIC! (Insert thunderous applause and screams.) In this edition this is another video overload. I’ll have more of these in the future. Check out my first video overload in #TWIMV4. As always be sure to click the links, which I have bolded for convenience. Thanks in advance. Let’s get to it.

Before I get into the reviews be sure to check out my posts from this week:

Now on to the videos. As I mentioned already there’s been a lot of videos released this week and although it’d be great for me to review THEM ALL, I’ll highlight some as well as include some new music at the end.

2 Chainz channels Michael Jackson’s, ‘Thriller’ (yes, you read correctly) in his new video for ‘Freebase’ off his latest project, Freebase-EP. He did give a disclaimer in the beginning of the video.

“This video is for entertainment purposes only and dedicated to one of my favorite artists. In no kind of way is it our intent to disrespect the legacy of the greatest entertainer of all time.”

The video stays true the concept of ‘Thriller’ and I get why he would go with a concept as such being as what freebase can do to people. Despite that, nothing else in the video added up. I mean it wasn’t a horrible video, but it only semi-made sense when it got to freebase. Great visual if you take out the rapping. I couldn’t stop laughing. Points to 2 Chainz for experimenting, but the video was off lyrically. Check it out below:

2 Chainz isn’t the only one experimenting with the visuals. Future took it to another level with his video, ‘Coupe’. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and watched it anyway not expecting much from it. Glad my bar wasn’t set high. This video is boring, the song is boring, and Future could and has done better. If interested, check it out below:

Common has released the visual for his Big Sean assisted track, ‘Diamonds’ from his latest album Nobody’s Smiling. The video is really nothing special as their silhouettes are merging over skylines in a black and white setting. I do like the song though. Common has announced his departure from G.O.O.D. Music as well. Take a look at the video below:

Daley has released a cliche video for his single ‘Look Up’ off his debut album, Days & Nights. He goes through the whole whirlwind of being on tour, how it’s a dream come true, the love from fans, etc. There’s nothing really exciting about it, but his voice is so amazing. Check it out below:

Until next time…

Video Review: Ariana Grande, ‘Problem’

DEIDAH.COM_Ariana Grande & Iggy Azalea Perform 'Problem' Together For The First Time!Ariana Grande has released the video for her latest radio smash ‘Problem‘ featuring Iggy Azalea and Big Sean. First off, I didn’t know Big Sean was the one whispering on the track. The video overall is a big fail for me. There was no concept behind it. First off I can see that the vibe/initial concept was to have a 70s type video. It went from having Iggy Azalea in a lava lamp like background (best description) to Big Sean whispering and of course Ariana Grande does the choreo that she’s been doing as she performs this track live. See here:

tumblr_n6em6ha6jn1r03sppo1_500Overall, I don’t think the song is bad. I think that it’s very catchy on the radio and is a great push/buzz for Ariana as she gears up to release her debut album. The video just could’ve been better. She looks awkward dancing. The concept is just thrown together. The dancers weren’t needed. I would’ve liked to see a love interest and flashback to Iggy Azalea fighting with a love interest as she rapped or something. Big Sean didn’t really need to be in the video. I know he does the hook, but with a fallout storyline his presence wouldn’t really be needed. Videos can make or break a song and for this one, it didn’t help.

In other news, ‘Problem’ sits in at #2 on the Hot 100. Not shabby at all.
