Welcome to another edition of This Week In Music (my typical intro). Click the links below for my posts of the week.
I have quite a bit to mention so let’s get right into it. The Billboard Awards finalists have been released and Taylor Swift leads the pack with 14 nominations. There’s no surprise there with the success of 1989 which spends its 23rd consecutive week on the Billboard 200 this week. Sam Smith has 13 nominations, followed by Iggy Azalea with 12 nominations. ‘All About That Bass’ singer, Meghan Trainor, isn’t to be left out with 9 nominations. For full list of nominees, click HERE. Prayers go out to Taylor as she announced that her mother has been diagnosed with cancer. The Billboard Music Awards air May 17th and will be hosted by Ludacris and Pete Wentz.
Moving on to chart news, Wale has dethroned Kendrick Lamar who had the #1 spot for two weeks. Wale’s, The Album About Nothing, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 100,00 copies sold in its first week. The biggest triumph on the chart would have to be the Furious 7 Soundtrack which catapulted to #2 from it’s last weeks position of 17. In at #3 is Ludacris’, Ludaversal. As for the Hot 100, Mark Monsoon and Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk,’ still sits pretty at #1. Maybe just maybe it will tie with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s ‘One Sweet Day’ which has the record of 16 weeks.
As for new collabs on the way, fans of Danity Kane have watched the group dwindle like a countdown, 5..4…3…2. Yes the group is officially no more and the reunion is short lived. As a group Danity Kane released 2 albums under Bad Boy Records. My personal favorite was their second, Welcome to the Dollhouse. After watching Making The Band 3 and seeing how the group was formed I was a fan instantaneously once the group was finally formed. Now it’s just down to two ladies, Shannon Bex and Aubrey O’Day, who know call themselves DumBlonde. Interesting to see how this will pan out.
In other collabs, Britney Spears is teaming with Iggy Azalea in what can be a comeback or a flop with a track titled, ‘Pretty Girls.’ Britney Spears has rejuvenated her career successfully in the past, but could this collab be another chart topper? From the pictures on the internet, I’m not too sure. Hopefully the song if nothing else is decent enough for radio buzz. Maybe it’ll last longer than the short lived Fergie return.
Lastly, congrats are in order to new parents Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. They welcomed a baby boy over the weekend, Silas Ryan Timberlake.
Until next week…

Billboard have given their Hot 100 chart a new look in a partnership with Samsung. The new look allows readers to listen to the songs individually or as an entire playlist via Spotify or Rdio along with a button to watch the video. You can also share the song via Facebook or Twitter. No worries about being moved to a new page. Everything opens up on the chart and it’s easy to
In addition, in scrolling over the the artists position on the chart, to the left you can see the position of the song the previous week, the peak position, and number of weeks on the chart. There are also chart highlights separated into four categories: ‘Streaming Gainer,’ ‘Digital Gainer,’ ‘Airplay Gainer’, and ‘Hot Shot Debut.’
In sharing on Facebook and Twitter, you can create your own Top 10 based off what’s currently in the top 10 with a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 popup. You can drag the songs and add your name. Once done, share.
Check out the full view HERE and cheers to those who ranked in the top 10 this week. The ladies still rule in the top 5, but the guys are gaining. Only time will tell who.
In other news, Usher covers the latest Billboard cover. Click the pic to the interview excerpt below:
When I first saw the “All About That Bass” video on Facebook I was intrigued from the start from the colorful video and the message. I instantly wanted to hear more, but unfortunately all she had on her YouTube was her debut track. Meghan Trainor is a signer-songwriter from Massachusetts signed to Epic Records. The track has soared 20 spots into the top 10 of the Hot 100, from 28-8, which is pretty decent considering in just five weeks its sold over 350,000 copies.
Check out her colorful, size doesn’t matter video below (directed by Fatima Robinson):
As for who else is on the Hot 100, Magic! still holds tight for the 4th week with ‘Rude’. Sam Smith is vying for the number one spot as ‘Stay With Me’ moves up a spot to #2. In at #3 is Iggy Azalea’s, ‘Fancy’ which swapped spots with Sam Smith with in a week as it slowly moves down the charts. No worries, it’s still sold over 3 million copies, and counting. Nico and Vinz hold tight at #4 with ‘Am I Wrong’ and in at #5 is Ariana Grande’s, ‘Problem’.
Jessie J’s latest single, ‘Bang Bang’, featuring Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj has debuted at #6 and in at #7 is Maroon 5’s ‘Maps’. As mentioned above, ‘All About That Bass’ is in at #8, Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ is in at #9, and rounding off the top 10 is Disclosure’s ‘Latch’.
Can Meghan Trainor hold momentum and soar higher into the top 10?
Will Sam Smith finally get a taste of the top spot with ‘Stay With Me?’
Is ‘Bang Bang’ on the road to #1?
Only time will tell. Until next time …
