DIY Happy Planner Half Sheet Notebook

Allow me to reintroduce myself…

We’ll I’m back to blogging. I tend to go through these phases where I just need a break. Let me not lie, I go through phases of not wanting to do anything. Anyway, I’m back and that’s all that matters. right? Right!

Today’s post is a DIY. I’m on a serious no spend from now until the end of August. All Summer long I’m shopping my personal stash. If there’s something I really want, I have two options: not buy or DIY.

As always, be sure to click the links throughout this post for related posts and links to purchase items/similar styles featured.

Sometimes I create DIYs for personal use. Other times, I want to share a cheaper alternative.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this half sheet notebooks

  • Old Happy Planner cover (classic size)
  • Discs
  • Scrapbook paper / old dividers

Note: Instead of using an old Happy Planner cover with a chopping mat or placement. Both can be purchase from Dollar Tree.

I used the original Happy Planner half sheet notebook as a template. I purchased mine from Hobby Lobby. They have sales where you can get 40% off one item. Lately they’ve been having 40% off the entire Happy Planner line. I went with the design “Squeeze the Day.”

Using the classic size of the Happy Planner made it easy for me to measure. All I had to do was attach the classic cover to the half sheet cover and cut. I did use my trimmer at first for a cleaner line before using scissors to clean things up.

The scrapbook paper / old dividers are used for the inside of the cover. If you don’t mind the way it looks, then leave as is. My cover was from the 2017 planner with the phrase, ‘This Is Your Year.’ I used the inside of that cover as the new cover for my notebook. That left the quote on the inside with half of it cut off. First I used old dividers but they didn’t match and I wasn’t pleased with the result. I then swapped it with scrapbook paper. The best way to adhere the paper to the plastic was with double stick tape.

I decided to upcycle my old covers to make this process easier. It was just a matter of cutting down the classic cover. I didn’t have to punch any holes. Best part, the covers were just sitting on my shelf. This was a great way to repurpose.

For those that are not using Happy Planner covers, a Dollar Tree chopping mat works the same. You’ll just have to use a hole punch and scissors. Easy process and the plastic of the mat is thin enough so that you’re not  killing your hand using the punch. Want to take it a step further, take some of those wall decals from Dollar Tree and personalize the cover.

Just like that the notebook is complete. You can buy filler paper or you can cut your own and hole punch. I had some dot grid paper I scored on clearance from JoAnn Fabrics that I knew would work great for this project. Not sure what I’m using this notebook for just yet, but I can never have enough.

The planning fun doesn’t stop here!
