Kanye West to Receive Michael Jackson Vanguard Award

Last year Queen Bey set the stage on fire with a medley of her self-titled album as she was honored with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. The year before Justin Timberlake performed a medley of his hits and even reunited with his NSync bandmates as he was honored. This year at the 2015 VMAs, Kanye West will be honored with the award.

When the award was first created it was known as the Video Vanguard award, but in 1991 was named after Michael Jackson. Previous winners include: The Beatles (1984), Madonna (1986), Michael Jackson, (1988), Janet Jackson (1990), LL Cool J (1997), Britney Spears (2011), and most recently Justin Timberlake (2013) and Beyonce (2014).

While Kanye’s music is overshadowed by his antics, especially his Beyonce stan against Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs, there’s no denying that the man is talented. Hell if you just Google “Kanye west VMAs” his outburst is all you see. He burst on to the scene as a producer, but people really could take notice of his artistry with his album, The College Dropout. Since that release in 2004, Kanye has gone on to release five more albums and accumulate a slew of awards including 21 Grammy’s.

Looking past his albums, let’s focus on the point of the VMAs, VIDEOS! Kanye has great ones although I’m not a huge fan of his recent ones. He also loves to take the artistry from the videos and infuse them into his performances. His sets are always a sight to see although some may not agree with how it was executed. He’s more than a rapper, he’s an artist. With the direction he’s going it’s clear that he wants others to recognize his artistry and not just the guy who flips and can spit bars.

MTV stated:

…his career-spanning groundbreaking videos, legendary VMA performances, and continued impact on music, art, fashion, and culture.

I’m all for a Kanye performance, it makes the show worth watching. Plus, who doesn’t want to hear his speech? That’s the real gem of it all.

Check out my 2014 VMA review HERE! The 2015 VMAs air THIS SUNDAY (8/31) LIVE on MTV with Miley Cyrus as host. Performers include: Pharrell, Demi Lovato, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Tori Kelly, A$AP Rocky and Twenty One Pilots. Read HERE for full details. I’m excited to see Kanye’s set and I wonder if his wife will present him with the award and will his bro Hov be in attendance.
