It’s that time of year again or the BET Awards. I remember when I was in middle school I would be excited to watch the show. Now it’s just gotten to be too generic, the winners are too predictable and there’s nothing really special about the performances. It’s amazing that the show has lasted 14 years. Maybe next year they’ll do something special for the 15th annual. Check out my 2014 performance review here.
Let’s get to the basics. The show will be hosted by Black-ish stars Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson. Performers include: the cast of Empire, Kendrick Lamar, Nick Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown, Meek Mill, and Ne-Yo. Humanitarian Award recipient is Tom Joyner and Lifetime Achievement recipient is Smokey Robinson.
Moving on to the nominees, I wanted to cover some of the categories. Check out my 2014 predictions here. First category, Best Female Hip Hop Artist. I see this category as a joke. Nicki Mianj will win, yet again. Here’s the nominees:
- Azealia Banks
- Dej Loaf
- Iggy Azalea
- Nicki MInaj
I’m not really sure why Trina was nominated. I guess she’s a filler for the sixth spot. As for the other 4 young ladies, they’ve all made a name for themselves in someway. Azealia Banks is known more so for controversy than her music. Dej Loaf has her smash ‘Try Me.’ Poor Iggy can’t catch a break. Then there’s Tink, Timbaland’s new prodigy. My pick – Nicki.
Best Male Hip Hop Artist Nominees:
- Kendrick Lamar
- Big Sean
- J. Cole
This is a great list of nominees and they all have great punchlines with substance. Okay, some more than others. I really don’t care who wins in this category because I enjoy music from all 6. Drake won last year and I chose Kendrick. I’m going again with Kendrick this year.
Best Female R&B/Pop Artist Nominees:
- Janelle Monae
- Jhene Aiko
- K. Michelle
Interesting category, but I’m not sure why Rihanna is nominated. Okay, yes she has had singles over the past year, but I think to be nominated you need a legit album. Then again in today’s music industry, albums clearly aren’t everything. Queen Bey won last year, she’ll probably win again. My pick goes to her.
Best Male R&B/Pop Artist Nominees:
- Chris Brown
- Trey Songz
- The Weeknd
- August Alsina
- John Legend
Chris Brown has been making MOVES out here, more so for his relationships and new beautiful daughter Royalty. Regardless he’s quite the entertainer and makes great music. I’m not as big of a fan of Trey Songz anymore which is sad. I love his older stuff from Gotta Make It, Trey Day, and especially Ready. Even his mix tapes in between then were amazing. I’m just not obsessed like I used to be and no his music isn’t the same. The Weeknd I am falling in love with and I’m really just getting into his music. As for his older fans, they don’t seem too pleased with his mainstream sound. August Alsina had a rough patch this past year, but I really can’t wait to hear new music from him. Usher and John Legend just happen to be there. I did enjoy John’s last album, Love In The Future. Not to discredit any of the other nominees, but my pick is Chris Brown. The ladies love him.
Best New Artist Nominees:
- Bobby Shmurda
- Dej Loaf
- Fetty Wap
- Rae Sremmurd
- Sam Smith
This one is a no brainer. My pick is Fetty Wap simply because he’s a Jersey native. He’s also one of the only nominees to have chart topping success on the Hot 100, except for Sam Smith of course. Too bad Sam wasn’t included in the Best Male R&B/Pop artist category. I guess they had to throw him in here. With all the Grammy’s he racked up he could easily win by default.
Video of the Year Nominees:
- Beyoncè: ‘7/11’
- Big Sean: ‘IDFWU’
- Chris Brown: ‘Loyal’
- Chris Brown: ‘New Flame’
- Nicki Minaj: ‘Anaconda’
- Common x John Legend: ‘Glory’
Be sure to click the links highlighted for my video reviews. I wish Janelle Moane’s,’Electric Lady,’ would’ve been nominated instead of ‘Loyal.’ ‘Glory’ could win simply because of it’s meaning and depth behind the video, but since ‘Electric Lady’ wasn’t nominated, I’m definitely rooting for ‘7/11.’
Best Collaboration Nominees:
- Chris Brown x Tyga: ‘Loyal’
- Big Sean x E-40: ‘IDFWU’
- Chris Brown x Usher x Rick Ross: ‘New Flame’
- August Alsina x Nicki Minaj: ‘No Love (Remix)’
- Common x John Legend: ‘Glory’
- Mark Ronson x Bruno Mars: ‘Uptown Funk’
If the mega smash ‘Uptown Funk’ doesn’t win, BET officially sucks. There’s no more to say to that. I prefer ‘New Flame’ over ‘Loyal,’ but ‘Loyal’ was a smash. STILL it didn’t top the charts like that of ‘Uptown Funk.’ Simple pick for me.
We’ll have to wait and see who wins. The BET Awards air this Sunday, June 28th, 8pm EST LIVE from the Staples Center.
