This Week In Music (V.28): Chart News & More

Welcome to another edition of This Week In Music. Click HERE for last weeks edition plus click the links below for additional news of the week:

Excuse the lack of posts. I’m still getting used to my schedule of four posts a week in addition to work and grad school. Excuses, excuses. Let’s get into the news.

The biggest news of the week was the star-studded launch of Tidal. I’ve dedicated a whole post to the launch so be sure to click the link above for new details. There has been exclusive music released on the site as Beyonce has released a new track, ‘Die For You,’ and Rihanna’s full release of ‘American Oxygen.’

As for chart news, Kendrick Lamar is still at the top of the Billboard 200 for a second week with his album To Pimp a Butterfly. Over on the Hot 100 Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’. ‘Uptown Funk,’ for the 13th week. This is a new record as it surpasses ‘Blurred Lines’ which remained at the top for 12 weeks. The only other track to have more than 14 weeks is Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men collaboration, ‘One Sweet Day,’ which spent 16 weeks on the chart. Regardless of whether ‘Uptown Funk’ will tie or surpass ‘One Sweet Day,’ it can tie with 14 weeks with: ‘I Will Always Love You’ (Whitney Houston), ‘I’ll Make Love To You’ (Boyz II Men), ‘Macarena’ (Bayside Boys Mix), ‘Candle in the Wind 1997’/’Something About the Way You Look Tonight’ (Elton John), ‘We Belong Together’ (Mariah Carey), and ‘I Gotta Feeling’ (Black Eyed Peas). I’m waiting on a new Bruno Mars album, but in the meantime I’ll take the radio overload of ‘Uptown Funk.’ I hope the track will make it to at least 15 weeks. There’s no track holding that spot.

ciara-jackie-coverCiara has revealed the album artwork for her upcoming sixth studio album to be titled, Jackie. As I stated in my review of ‘I Bet,’ this album seems like it’s going to be reminiscent of Evolution especially with the break up songs. I don’t mind hearing a slow jam or two from Ciara, but I want to hear a dance track. Nothing too crazy, but something sleek enough to be on the radio and get her some buzz. She has also announced that she will be hitting the road for a promo tour during the month of May beginning in Chicago and wrapping up in San Francisco. Click HERE for tour dates. No official release date for Jackie, but its set to be released sometime in May as well. Check out her performance of ‘I Bet’ LIVE on Kelly and Michael below:

thumbNew-2.phpQuick recap of the iHeartRadio awards. The show was hosted by Jamie Foxx with performances by: Kelly Clarkson (‘Heartbeat Song’), Meghan Trainor (‘Dear Future Husband’), Jamie Foxx/Chris Brown (‘You Changed Me’), Iggy Azalea/Jennifer Hudson (‘Trouble’), Nick Jonas (‘Chains’), and Florida Georgia Line. As for the performer who stole the show it’d have to go to Rihanna. Despite the song being her typical shit talking swag her vibe is infectious. It’s hard not to like it. Check out her performance below:

thumbNew-1.phpthumbNew.phpThe big winner of the night was Taylor Swift who won Artist of the Year, Song of the Year (‘Shake It Off’), and Lyrics of the Year (‘Blank Space’). Click HERE for full list of winners. Lastly, congrats to Justin Timberlake for winning the Innovator Award.

Until next week…
