Original v. Cover [V.9]: Christmas Classics

Three of my favorite Christmas songs were covered this year: ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ (Band Aid), ‘All I Want for Christmas’ (Mariah Carey), and ‘War Is Over’ (John Lennon). I love comparing the original to the cover because I love to see how artist put their touch on classics.

It’s been 30 years since the release of Band Aid’s, ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ and in celebration of that artists teamed up to remake the classic. Some artists include: One Direction, Bono, Sam Smith, Chris Martin, Rita Ora, Ed Sheeran, Emili Sandé, Ellie Goulding and more. When I heard it on the radio I really didn’t like it, but it’s for a good cause. All proceeds will go to The Band Aid Charitable Trust.

Listen to both below:

Mariah Carey has been getting a lot of flack for her performance of her classic, ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ at this years Christmas tree lighting in NYC. Despite her lack of vocal power the song in its original form will forever be a classic.

Trey Songz covered this track and I am not impressed at all. It doesn’t sound organic, Trey seems to be doing a bit much. I get that it’s a cover, but his voice is what is messing up the track. I get the soulful vibe, yet his voice sounds like it’s being filtered through auto tune. Not a fan of this rendition. Take a listen below to the original and cover below:

Adam Levine (& Maroon 5) covered John Lennons’ classic track ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ during A Very Grammy Christmas. They recorded this years ago, but I’m just hearing it. While I love the song and the energy that the original brings I am not a fan of Maroon 5’s version. I would’ve love to hear the band do something more upbeat. Their rendition just made the song seem more depressing. Vocally Adam didn’t sound bad, it was just a drag overall. Listen to both versions below:
