There have been a lot of albums, of course, released this year, but none have been able to reach platinum success. The Frozen Soundtrack was cerified platinum this year with over 3 million copies sold, but it does not count as it was released in November 2013. Beyoncé’s self-titled album had tremendous success in 2013, but again she did not sell another 1 million copies this year despite the album being certified double platinum. The question is, with a week and two months left of the year, will there be any album to sell over a million this year?
Taylor Swift is up at bat with 1989 being released today (10/27/14). While album sales are officially up on Billboard next Wednesday (11/5/14), the numbers will be out before them whether she succeeded or not. Taylor could pull it off due to her success of two of her albums, Speak Now and Red, which both sold 1 million in the first week.
There has also been a rumored playlist of Rihanna supposedly dropping an album sometime in November which will be her 5th straight album released in November if that is true. Her sales of Unapologetic were over 200,000 in the first week. The album went on to sell over a million copies as of May 2013. Could she pull a Beyoncé and surprise us all? See the picture for yourself. Overall, the best bet would be Taylor Swift to pull it off, but the element of “surprise” could work in Rihanna’s favor.
Let’s get to the stats. In 2013 there was a steadily decline from 5.7 (1st quarter) to 5.23 (2nd quarter) to 4.86 (3rd quarter) million. This year there is a similar fate as everything is down percentage wise from album sales to digital album sales and track sales.
Billboard compared the Top 10 albums of 1994 to the top 10 of 2014 and there is really no comparison. Every single album of 1994 TRUMPS those released in 2014. It all comes down to us being in a different age where everything is bootlegged, music is in the forefront and ahead of fashion in a way. You can get an album before it drops which is why with Beyonce exclusively releasing an album to not only iTunes, but as a “surprise” garnered her so much success.
The year is coming to a quick close and the only artist I think that could pull it off, if there is to be a platinum album of 2014 released in 2014, wold be Taylor Swift. One album compared to the 10 platinum albums in the the top 10 of 1994 shows just how much the industry is suffering.
